We had the good fortune of connecting with Velmeca McCrea and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Velmeca, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to help educate and empower individuals on the importance of life insurance. This is especially important in the African American community because often times we don’t talk about anything finance related growing up. However, once we reach adulthood the concept of life insurance is often thought of as an unnecessary expense versus a generational wealth creation tool. I started this journey with AFLAC supplemental insurance the first year with their accident, cancer and critical care and recovery policies. I finally found time to study and take the leap into life insurance as well as this was my true passion. I started with family and friends and I continued to branch out from there. My passion to help ensure clients understand what life insurance and even supplemental insurance can do for them and their families is what drives me. I want them to understand life insurance is affordable and more than just a burial plan.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart is my goal to reach African American clients under 45 however, I work with clients of all races. It is important to ensure that people understand if they establish life insurance early they will be able to lock in better rates. It has not been easy because people often see life insurance as an unnecessary expense since most people under 50 are not trying to think about life existing without them for their family and friends. What has helped is getting people to understand the living benefits that life insurance can offer in the event they are critically, chronically or terminally ill. Allowing clients to see benefits that exist outside of death has been essential in this industry.
I want people to know that we prepare for so many unfortunate things to happen in life by having insurance on our phones, cars, legal services, houses and pets. However, when we ask people to ensure the one thing that is truly irreplaceable they don’t see the value. If more people saw how the ones left to live without them could benefit from them having life insurance in place it would make a world of difference. Especially when something happens to a parent before their child is 18 think of all the support your child will miss out on from your loss. Life insurance is for those left to live without you.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
It would have to be my mother and grandparents. My trio has always been willing to talk with me about life insurance. I recall being in my early 20s asking about life insurance as several family members were passing during this time. It was at that time that my trio talked with me about their life insurance status and made sure I was aware of where these documents were located and what to do if something happened. The final push came in 2017 when I was the joint beneficiary for my great aunt Sharon. The process was seamless handling all of her final expenses because she had life insurance. It allowed the grieving process to occur because we were not crippled with trying to find money to bury her at the same time we were trying to process that she was truly gone. My success is dedicated to my mom, grandparents and late aunt Sharon as their love and support has always propelled me to the next level in life.
