We had the good fortune of connecting with Vedika Savalani and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vedika, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking

Risk taking is something I am still trying to figure out. But one thing I have realized is whether or not it pans out, you will always learn a lesson along the way that is worth knowing.

One of, if not the biggest risk I ever took was leaving home and moving halfway around the world. I am originally from Hong Kong and moved to the States in December 2019 for college. Leaving home and pushing myself out of my comfort zone in ways I could not have predicted has formed a big part of who I am today. And allowed me to have confidence in my abilities and the person/creative I am. Gaining that confidence has allowed me to take more risks in my life and career, both big and small. And in the process I have learned that taking risks are what allow me to grow as a creative and a person. And that even if the worst result happens. It’s a moment that will pass and at the end of the day things will work themselves out and I will be fine.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was able to get to where I am today with a combination of my own skill and wits, my support system, and luck. One thing I have noticed is that there is no right path to “success”, and that no matter what it is not going to be easy. Success on its own is so subjective that I question what it means for myself. So, I try not to dwell on it and just do. Whether it is doing something creative or putting myself out there for opportunities, engaging in new challenges and goals is what keeps me going. Another lesson I have learned is figuring out what the first step “should be” is a trap, and that the important part is to just take a step, regardless of what it is, it will lead you down the right path.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First things first, they need to get some food, and if you’re coming to Atlanta, I am definitely feeding you Southern food first. So I would take them to Maple Street Biscuits. Afterwards we will be going to Georgia Aquarium and taking the behind the seas tour to get the full experience. For lunch we’ve gotta stop by Ponce and sample all the amazing food there, then walk along the Beltline so our bodies could process everything we just ate. And for dinner make our way to either Iberian Pig or Tre Vele for some of the best dinner and drinks in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

There are so many people I am thankful to have in my life who deserve this shoutout, and they’re the ones who have been my support system over the last few years. During the pandemic I was diagnosed with leukemia (I am in remission now and it’s all good). But it was definitely the most difficult period of my life, and without the support of my family, my boyfriend, his family, my friends, professors, doctors and nurses, I would quite literally be dead. And I have no intention of sounding dramatic when I say this, it just happens to be the nature of situation I was in.

During tiring times like that you learn what you’re capable of when you have your back pressed against a wall. However, you also learn who has your back and I learned that no matter what happens in my life I am not alone, and I could not be more grateful to have those people in my life.
