We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrin Graham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyrin, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always used fashion and beauty as a way to express and uplift myself. The older I got I started to use this tool to connect and interact with other people socially in new environments. I come from a big family and i’m my parents eldest child, I have 7 younger siblings so I’ve always tried to hold my own financially in some way. When I got to college it became difficult for me and that’s what peaked my interest in the beauty industry because so many of my peers would come to me for beauty supplies, outfits for the weekend and hair services. When my friends would be down about a boy, or normal school girl stressors; I’d hang up a sheet, do everyone’s hair and makeup and we’d play music and have a photoshoot just to feel good and brighten our spirits. My friends would start to invite their friends, people would see us on social media and want to catch a vibe and I finally decided to go all in and start a business. I knew early on that I wanted to help any and every woman feel amazing about themselves when they couldn’t do it on their own. After college I continued to be on call for my friends when they needed me and grew as a travel stylist.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I like to look at myself as a creative more than a stylist or beautician. It hasn’t been an easy journey because in the beauty industry people want you to have a specialty or specific title which can sometimes box you in. I learned early on that I was very different, I appreciate building genuine relationships over anything. I’m very proud that people know they can depend on me for when they need a pick me up physically and spiritually. I like to give people an experience and I will be whatever it is you need from me, whether that’s being your personal stylist or just a confidant, and anyone I encounter will feel that about me. Once you meet me, you always have somebody in your corner that will back you up on being unapologetically YOU!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Anytime I bring my friends to Atlanta of course I have to introduce them to the peach drink and some mild with lemon pepper wings from American Deli! If they’re hip to that then we’re going to JR crickets, another one of my favorites. I love a night out at Cirque! They’re frozen drinks are amazing and I always make some new friends there. I also can’t forget the World of Coca Cola, i’ve moved it since a kid and it’s just such a nostalgic place. While you’re in the area you might as well learn some history at the Civil Rights Museum as well.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All credit and recognition goes to every single person that has ever supported me! My amazing college roommate Kiley that encouraged me to monetize my talents, and all classmates I had that let me practice in their head. My mother and grandmother for letting me use their house as a salon. My dad and grandfather for being my first investors; and especially Tacoy for believing in me and being the first person to introduce me to the real salon life.
