We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Russell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
When I first started in Real Estate I was anxious to get any business I could, so I developed some pretty unhealthy habits as it related to work-life balance. I was always on call to respond immediately to any calls/texts/emails. This constant “ON” led to burnout and I have had to reset boundaries for when I respond to client contacts. It is still important for clients to feel like I am available to guide them through a transaction but I am human and I have to take time for my mental and physical health, which means setting aside time for relaxation with family and friends. When I am happy and healthy I am better suited to serve others.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a real estate advisor at Engel & Völkers Atlanta. I got my degree in Real Estate from the University of Georgia in 2008 and founded my company, J Tyler Russell Realty Group, in 2014. After graduation, I ended up in retail mattress sales full-time for 5 years. It was never something I had envisioned for myself but looking back it was a wonderful learning period for me and has helped me tremendously in my real estate career. The listening, problem-solving, and sales skills I developed inside the mattress store across tens of thousands of sales presentations directly translate in my day-to-day interactions with Buyer and Seller clients. If it had not been for that crash course in sales I don’t think I would have been able to scale my real estate business as quickly as I have. That’s not to say the road to my current production levels has been easy, I have always had a desire to be the best at whatever I do. I hold myself to a high standard and expect that I will quickly rise to the top of any group of peers. So when it took me almost 6 months to land my first listing I was less than pleased with my performance. But adversity always breeds creativity and resourcefulness so I am grateful for obstacles overcome and lessons learned along the way. In 2021 I was inducted into Engel & Völkers Private Office, an exclusive group of global advisors who are at the top of their fields in production, service, and client engagement. This distinction is reserved for only a couple hundred advisors worldwide and only 8 of us in the state of Georgia, so to be invited and inducted was truly an honor.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a best friend coming to Atlanta for a week we would definitely start our tour in my neighborhood of Inman Park. I love the architecture, sense of community, and the incredible shopping/dining options. We would for sure grab dinner at Nina & Rafi, Kevin Rathbun’s Steak, Beetlecat and Barcelona during their visit. Brunch would be at Bread & Butterfly – the breakfast sandwich is heavenly! Dessert is one of my favorite things to indulge so a trip, or seven, to Voga for the best Gelato around is absolutely on the itinerary. We would explore the Eastside Beltline trail, including Ponce City Market and perhaps a visit to the famous Clermont Hotel for both rooftop and basement views. For quick day trips I would take them to Blue Ridge and Chattanooga, with a stop at Buc-ees of course. More local excursions would include the High Museum of Art, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Piedmont Park, and the aquarium. We are so spoiled with local eats and attractions it would be impossible to squeeze all of the good stuff into a week but I think that would be a great start.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My family have been my champions since day one. They were and continue to be ambassadors for my brand, never missing an opportunity to tell others about my business and encourage them to use my services. Without a strong network of supporters I would not have had the courage to start my own business, much less grow the business to what it is today.
