We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyesha Carrington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tyesha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting my business was freedom … and also wanting to work for myself and do something that would make women feel good about theirselves. I know how good I feel when I just leave the hair salon from getting my hair done so why not be able to give others that same experience? I knew I wanted to have a job that I can make my own hours or work as much as I’d like to. People think that having your own business means you don’t have to work as much, or you get all this vacation and free time but that is definitely not the case. I actually find myself working around the clock constantly for my brand but I love it & couldn’t imagine myself doing anything else.

What should our readers know about your business?
I am a licensed cosmetologist & have a business called BeYoutiful By Ty. I specialize in Healthy Hair/Silk press & natural installs. I sell hair extensions as well. Something that sets me apart from others is that I care for the health of my clients natural hair rather than just a hairstyle. A lot of people keep up with the hair trends now-a-days like frontals, lace wigs, etc which is perfectly fine but they often tend to forget to care for the health of their natural hair. I’ve always thought that no matter how many wigs, frontals, braids you wear, your natural hair is still going to be there .. so why not take care of it? I am no way against protective styles but nothing beats having healthy hair. protective styles should always be a choice, not because you’re ashamed of your hair and trying to cover it up. I am very proud of myself for how far I’ve come, even with the way I’ve handled everything. The journey has been far from easy .. from being in cosmetology school & working, to passing my state boards, working for someone when I knew I did not want to do (which I’m thankful that I did, because it helped me find my niche), to relocating to a new city all by myself with ZERO clientele .. just a dream & a plan. The most challenging part of my journey was getting through cosmetology school. I was 24 at the time & had just moved into my own apartment by myself. My school schedule was 9am to 3:30pm Tuesday through Saturday. I had two jobs at two different hospitals working night shift(7pm-7am, or 11pm-7am), so all I could think was how am I going to be able to go to hairschool during the day & be able to stay awake to work at night at the hospital? It was ROUGH! It was times I’d stay up for 24-48 hours straight. Lack of sleep was an understatement, I was so tired some days I didn’t even understand how I was making it but I knew that going into cosmetology school & I also knew that I didn’t have to do it for long .. it took me a little over a year to finish the program. I feel like working those hours & going to school prepared me for my journey, & I wouldn’t want it any other way. I just want people to know that if you want it bad enough, you’ll do whatever it takes to get it. Never settle and always stay consistent. Consistency is everything when it comes to success, you can’t cheat it or take short cuts … and even when you feel like giving up, it’s a must that you keep going. Also, NEVER wait on other people, do what you have to do for YOU! I’m excited about my future & where i’m headed … the crazy thing is, is that i’m just getting started 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Me and my best friend are true homebodies lol we love being in the house and just chillin … drinking a little something, cooking up something, playing games(particularly uno because that’s all I really know how to play lmaoooo) & just vibing with each other. We love going out to eat & trying new places so that’s something that mostly would be on or itinerary. We love festival type of activities, like food truck rodeos, spring/summer festivals, those type of things. We don’t really club often, if anything we’ll go a lounge type of place but there must be food involved lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d first like to give a shout-out to God because without him none of this would be possible. I’d also like to shout out my mom .. I love her so much, she’s literally the hardest working women I know, I aspire to be as great as her one day …I know for a fact I get my hustle from her. I’d also like to shout out my best friend Veronica .. she’s been around since day one, I love her so much. And I would most definitely like to shout out all of clients/customers .. they literally keep me going, I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for them & I am so grateful and thankful for each and every one of them.
