We had the good fortune of connecting with Twilla Twaun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Twilla Twaun, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
I would have to say the best decision I made apart from being a self made independent artist was taking on the role of being a real businessman first. The music itself is only 20% of what needs to be done to be taken seriously as a music artist, the other 80% is all business such as marketing, promo, advertising, monetizing and of course having a solid team and fan base.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
When people mention the Chicago music sene they always reference the (Drill) element of the music they never really glorify the artist that make good all around music and I think that thats the difference between me and the average rappers from my city. I have always been independent and never tried to fit in with the norm. I have a roster of artists from all over not just Chicago. We are recently organized in at least 7 states and the (AIU) label and brand is only getting bigger as we speak. I don’t consider calling myself a drill rapper or a trap rapper even though that’s what I touch on a lot in my music but I also speak on the every day struggles of just life in the streets period and just with me speaking on my real life events alone is real quality street music by itself and I believe with the right moves in the near future I’ll soon be the new voice of Chicago music hands down.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For anybody that’s never been to Chicago you gotta try Herolds Chicken with the extra mild sauce on the wings and fries I promise you ain’t had chicken till you try Herolds.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off I wanna give a shoutout to all my fans, friends, and supporters because without them we wouldn’t even be having this conversation so big ups to everybody that’s team (Twilla). Secondly I would like to give a big shoutout to my independent recording label (AIU) also known as (Add It Up Gang). I appreciate all the artist and affiliates that’s riding with me on journey to the top. And last but not least shoutout to my danm self for beating the odds making it out of south side Chicago and making ways for others to do the same as well and I need everybody to be looking out for my new project and book both titled (Diary Of A Savage) dropping soon on all platforms and my book will be releasing shortly after.
