We had the good fortune of connecting with Trishana Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trishana, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
People are probably unaware of how much much work goes into being in this industry and actually doing makeup . I think that many times people think doing makeup is as simple as just picking up a makeup brush and drawing on someones face when theres so much more to it than that . Customer service , stamina , and , creativity are just a few things that people do not think about when then look at the “successful” people in the beauty and makeup industry .

Sometimes people do not think theres a space for them since the growth of the makeup industry however i think there is a space for everyone , you just have to find your niche and perfect it . It took me a long time to understand that my style of makeup isn’t going to be liked by everyone and that’s okay. There’s still so much room to grow in the beauty industry especially for women of color so if you know this the industry for you , don’t give up !

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
It surely was not easy to overcome a lot of the challenges that I faced along the way of getting my business to where it is now . I started wearing makeup in high school around the time when it became a big deal to have your brows on “fleek” and a nice pair of lashes on to go with it . I taught myself how to put on lashes and then gradually over time I started to teach myself how to do a full face of makeup and ive been in love with makeup ever since . Im most proud of the fact that I was able to stick to my craft despite feeling as though the market was too saturated and that there was no space for me .

I had to overcome the fear of failure and the fear of others not approving of my work . I learned that its best to stay true to who you are and those who are meant to be clients will be your clients or those meant to be there for your fame and success will be there when its time . I would want everyone to know that while Beauty By Trish enjoys monetary gain and success I’m really in this business for black women . My end goal is to create a safe space for black women to enjoy self care , feel catered to and pampered, beautiful, and just safe !

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have visitors from out of town there are a few places I have to take them to while their here . I would definitely take them to The Varsity , Grindhouse Killer Burger , Hattie B’s Chicken , and Paschals just to name a few restaurants that I personally enjoy . I almost forgot to mention my new favorite restaurant, Hot Dog Pete’s behind the old Braves stadium! I’m such a homebody I would definitely have to phone a friend about the best night spots but when I do step out I like to hang out at lounges or fun activities so I would take them to Putt Shack , Main Event , or even to Dave & Busters . For the super late night hangout I would take them to House of Hookah , Sivas , or even eleven45 lounge .

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would shoutout my parents because they have been such a major part of my success thus far . They have supported me in all of the crazy things that I have wanted to try and have also trusted my judgement no matter what .My dad having his own business has been one the biggest blessings thus far because I definitely look up to him and turn to him for all my entrepreneurship advice . I definitely believe I’m following in his footsteps when it comes to creating a name for myself and my brand

My good friend , Tashara deserves a little shoutout as well because as a fellow makeup artist she pushes me to try new things with my craft and my business. I think everyone needs a friend that holds you accountable when it comes to your business and Tashara is definitely that friend .
