We had the good fortune of connecting with Triniti Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Triniti, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, at 18 years old and in quarantine as a high school senior, I dedicated myself to hard work at Walmart. Alongside an equally ambitious friend, we amassed earnings without the burden of bills or responsibilities. Together, we brainstormed business ideas, and I recalled creating a hair growth oil the summer prior, driven by my own insecurities about my natural hair, a struggle shared by many minority women and men. I aimed to develop a product to bolster confidence and enhance natural hair, challenging societal norms that have long marginalized our hair textures. My journey towards self-love continues, but each day brings greater confidence. My goal is not just profit, but to make a meaningful impact.
What should our readers know about your business?
Shenanigans Hairtique is more than just a hair and beard care company; it’s a movement dedicated to boosting confidence in minority men and women while promoting healthy hair through natural ingredients and special recipes. Our product line includes leave-in conditioners, shampoos, shampoo bars, hair sprays, and oils, all designed to combat dry, brittle, and damaged hair. But what truly sets us apart is our commitment to empowerment and creativity.
In addition to our curated products, we offer DIY kits to encourage creativity, bonding, self-love, and confidence among our customers. We believe in empowering individuals to become entrepreneurs through our independent consultant program, akin to direct selling models like Avon and Paparazzi. This program allows our consultants to provide personalized one-on-one experiences to customers worldwide, fostering trust and connection.
Starting this business hasn’t been easy, but it’s been incredibly rewarding. Every day brings new lessons and challenges, but I’m fueled by the opportunity to make a difference for my community. I draw strength from those who lacked the resources and opportunities I now have, driving me to put my best foot forward for the culture.
The most significant lesson I’ve learned is the importance of seeking help when needed. As an entrepreneur, it’s easy for things to slip through the cracks, but staying proactive and reaching out for support is crucial. I’ve embraced vulnerability and continuous learning, knowing that help is always just a call away. My journey is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the power of community, and I’m excited to continue making an impact through Shenanigans Hairtique.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend were visiting Virginia, I’d make sure they experience the vibrant culture and diversity of the Hampton Roads area. We’d kick off our adventure at Jikoni’s Cafe, a vegan cafe and bookstore in Norfolk. Here, we’d dive into books highlighting the real history of African Americans and minority cultures while enjoying holistic and natural products. As a bonus, my business is based here, providing an opportunity to share my progress and connect with fellow local entrepreneurs.
After stimulating our minds, we’d head to Muse Sip and Paint to unleash our creativity on canvas. A stroll down Granby Street would immerse us in the local scene before we make our way to Virginia Beach. There, we’d soak in the mesmerizing waves and catch a breathtaking sunset, perhaps even burying ourselves in the sand for some playful fun.
Once we’ve brushed off the sand, it’s time for a culinary adventure along the boardwalk, indulging in bites from various restaurants and quick stops. While there’s so much more to explore, this itinerary promises a week filled with memorable experiences and meaningful connections in the heart of Virginia’s Hampton Roads.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to give a heartfelt shoutout to my grandmother, Mrs. Paulette Porter. Since I was a little girl, she played a pivotal role in shaping me into the entrepreneur I am today. Grandma ensured I participated in fundraisers, programs like Girl Scouts, modeling, cheerleading, and more, all aimed at nurturing leadership skills. Our entrepreneurial journey began with selling Girl Scout cookies, then crafting and selling jewelry, moving on to selling candy, and now producing hair and beard care products. Grandma saw the businesswoman in me long before I did, coming from a time when black ownership wasn’t readily attainable. Her impact and character-building are immeasurable. In 2020, when I launched my business, she not only supported me emotionally but also financially, encouraging me to invest in myself by putting funds into a savings account. She’s been my best friend since 2002, investing in me in every way possible – emotionally, financially, spiritually, and mentally. Grandma, thank you for believing in me and helping me become the person I am today.
