We had the good fortune of connecting with Trey Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Trey, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind my success is myself and the people around me. I cannot speak enough on how important you and the people within close proximity are to succeeding. Mostly up to this point so far, I have done nothing but tried to stay 100% confident and bet on myself every single time possible. The only person that will understand where you are trying to go in life is you. Regardless of how close your friends and family are, they are not you and cannot go inside your mind and read your exact thoughts. So at the end of the day, if you believe in yourself and keep working, that’s all you will need. But, on the other hand having a great support system is a booster like no other. Without my parents, family, and close friends I would probably not be where I am now. When I’m down on myself they always pick me up. My parents have made so many sacrifices for me to have the opportunities I have now and I can’t be more grateful for that. My family and close friends are so important too, those are my safety valves as well who listen and give me advice as needed. So without belief in myself and the support from my circle, I have nothing near the success I do now.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When it comes to my art, I am always looking for ways to improve and grow. But, I believe my best asset currently is documentation/storytelling. When it comes to sports, I am always looking to take shots that will create a mix of showing the emotion, hard work, and skill of the game while also taking shots that are a mark of the time and environment we are in. I get this from my favorite sports photographer Walter Iooss, he has a range of historical sports photographs that range from the likes of Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, to a young Kevin Garnett and Lebron James. When it comes to portraits, I try to tell the story of the subject and how they relate to the environment they are in. Studying a vast amount of photographers and photographs gives me inspiration to grow and continue on my journey. I will say, it hasn’t been easy to develop the skills of storytelling. But, I have to stay persistent and always keep my camera ready to go and document what is in front of me. Because, the reality of things is that an image I may take now may not mean much but in 5,10,15,20+ years from now it may be a mark of the times and the image may have value. So, just staying consistent is what I try to do best, because if I don’t then there will be no way for me to achieve my goal of taking historical and important images.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a close friend come visit me for about a week, I would definitely give a mix of New Jersey and New York. When it comes to things in my home state of New Jersey, I would definitely go eat at some of my favorite local spots such as pizza places or sandwich shops to try the unique style of food to New Jersey. Next, I would take them to some events in New Jersey that are based around house music. The vibe of house music in New Jersey is amazing, people just let go and let the music control their soul and house music events are just such beautiful events to be around. Then when it comes to New York, I would go thrifting in the city. Thrifting is almost like therapy for me. I love to look and find clothes that can elevate my style and be fun to wear. Next, I would love to go to one of the local streetball leagues in NYC to check out a game, because the basketball culture in NJ/NY is like none other and I love it. Lastly, I would link them up with great friend of mine D3nim who is a DJ and go enjoy some nightlife in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank my parents for sacrificing so much for me to be the young man I am now. The unbelievable effort they have put in for me to do what I would like, have what I would like, and go where I would like is amazing. The knowledge and love they share towards me everyday cannot be described in words. Simply put, I love my parents beyond what words or actions could describe and I want to thank them for literally every thing to put me in the position I am in now.
