We had the good fortune of connecting with Toyin Meghoma and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toyin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve always viewed and carried myself as a brand- my younger self has always been acutely conscious that my decisions and actions needed to contribute to the ultimate narrative of my future self. Above that, I’ve always had a “passion for fashion,” and from being an avid fan of shows like Fashion Police and Project Runway, I grew to learn that personal style supersedes fashion trends any day. Once I learned how to monetize my unique personal style, I chose to invest in myself as one would any brand- by purchasing filming equipment, researching social media algorithms and trends, and honing editing skills. These are a few of the steps I took and continue to take in an attempt to establish myself as a brand- as more than simply an influencer, a model, or just a girl who’s into fashion. Instead, I’m pursuing my childhood dream of establishing my name as a multi-dimensional creative brand, known for styling, content and business creation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
“Fashion you can buy, but style you possess.” My art is my personal style- it has taken me years to curate my style and it’s always in flux based on my influences and environment. I decided to hone my style and turn it into a career in 2021 as an influencer/content creator/stylist after I graduated college. Previously, I would spend hours curating outfits for events and special occasions, but once I started taking my art seriously, I would every free time curating outfits for my instagram posts, scouting out locations to make my content, consuming content from people with similar style, researching algorithms and tips, and developing my editing skills. My first post once I started “starting instagram seriously,” was an ode to the queen herself, Sza, which she saw and reposted to her story! That post went viral and was the perfect launch to my career. I’m a big believer that God gives us multiple talents and purposes- when you listen and trust in His direction, space will be created for you where you belong. The success of that initial post was super encouraging but it was short lived- I tried to ride the wave but I found it difficult to maintain that level of engagement and exposure on future posts. I struggled to overcome the feelings of disappointment that seeped in and almost led me to give up the chase. What kept me going was the encouraging words from my support system that reminded me why I started in the first place- because I wanted to remind people that God has put everything you need within you, all we have to do is listen and act.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friends were visiting my town, I would tell them not to bother. There are very few places to eat, drink and be merry. I would rather go to a city of our choosing, or better still, out of the country and explore a new area together.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be here without the support of my friends and family! My parents loved and supported me all my life and they are the reason I was able to establish myself as a registered nurse. Now, they continue to encourage me as I pursue my future in the creative and styling realm. My friends (Melons you know who you are!) are the reason I had the confidence to pursue a career in creativity. My sister, Kunbo, and one friend in particular, Gifty, put the battery in my back because they saw me succeeding and they held me accountable the whole way! Once I started the work, my girlfriends, Whitney, Maureen, and Amanda, supported me like I had already made it- they treat my content like it was the best they’d ever seen! I cannot forget to give a special shoutout to the friends I have picked up along the way. The friends I’ve never met who support and encourage me like they’ve known me for years, and the friends who inspire and push me to strive for new creative heights.
