We had the good fortune of connecting with Toraé Eastman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Toraé, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York where I developed my sense of design through my cultural experiences. My passion has always been to create a “WOW” factor for people, homes, and events. As a little girl, I would play fashion designer with my Nana, and draw different sketches of fashion and she would hang them on the back of her front door in her studio apartment. I would dress her up, do her makeup and we would put on fashion shows all the time.
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit even as a young girl. I had my own lemonade stand, made baskets for the holidays, braided hair etc. I always had a hustle. So even though I grew up in the inner city of New York, deep down inside I knew I was created for more. I didn’t know any business owners personally as a child or teenager, but I knew I liked being my own boss.
As an adult, I worked as an event planner and opened my first business. I worked on several events including fashion shows, corporate events, birthday parties, baby showers and weddings. Although I loved what I did, I soon realized that I was not passionate about the planning piece of the business and decided to close the business and go back to school. Five years after, I started my own interior design firm.
What should our readers know about your business?
I joined the corporate world after obtaining my BA from Rollins College, in Organizational Communication. It was then that I started my career as a Human Resources Manager and worked for a few industries before my last role at a major retailer. Here, surrounded by trending looks for homes, I had my “ahh haa” moment and realized that I was not walking in my God given purpose. I believe that I was created with purpose and part of that purpose is to edify and uplift people. Having no formal education in interior design, but still being able to do it as if I was technically trained, I knew this was a gift and I needed to use it to help people. By helping people’s visions come to fruition through interior design I can use my talent to bring happiness to others. Having this revelation, along with the push from my sister to turn the hobby of interior design into a business, I stepped out on faith and founded Modern Glam Designs Interior Firm in Kissimmee, Florida in October 2015.
In 2022, we re-branded, and changed the name to Lenore King Luxury Interiors. We partner with our clients to give them a luxurious interior design experience. Through our discovery process, we gain the knowledge needed from our clients to give them top tier services. Working with our firm, our clients feel heard, valued, and appreciated. Along with that we give them a luxurious design experience.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting, I would take her to downtown Orlando to visit the Wells’ Built Museum of African American History and Culture on South Street. This converted old hotel was built in 1920 and makes for a great historical experience in black culture. After we would grab a bite to eat by the lake at ” Relax Grill” for a quant waterside eatery experience. For a night on the town, we would go to Bob Marley’s in City Walk. Here would would enjoy the tunes of the Jamaican people with the live band and dance floor, while having the option to enjoy some authentic Jamaican cuisine.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to give credit first to God. It is the gifts that he has placed on the inside of me that allows me to do what I do. My sister, Chanel, deserves recognition for pushing me to step out on faith and start my design business. She saw more in me than what I could for myself initially. Lastly, my parents and my children deserve gratitude and praise for being supportive in all areas including but not limited to being part of my staff and helping get the installs complete.
