We had the good fortune of connecting with Toccara “Cari” Alam and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Toccara “Cari”, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
The one thing about the entertainment industry that outsiders are probably unaware of is how much “business” is a part of show business. When I was working my 9-5 job, I dreamed of quitting to because a professional singer. I didn’t realize how much of my 9-5 job that I would take with me into my creative career. From accounts payable/receivable, to marketing, HR with hiring band members, customer service, client communications, all of it! I was surprised that singing was the last part of the process. Playing the gig is the final step, but there are numerous, important steps before and after the gig that are vital to a successful career in entertainment.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve always been a creative person. I started my career getting a degree in fashion design and marketing. I’ve always been crafty and creative and having a degree gave my talent some credibility. Coming from a very musical family, after college I started band and followed the family business of being a musician. For the last decade I’m proud to have built a successful career as a musician and performer. In recent years, I expanded my brand to include acting and teaching acting!

None of this was easy. The business of entertainment and the creative arts is challenging, however, I overcome challenges by remembering who I am, the talent that I’ve been blessed with and the fact that I can use my talent to encourage and uplift to the world.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the City of Atlanta. During a visit to Atlanta, you have to eat good Southern food, visit our numerous museums and attractions including the Center for Civil and Human Rights museum, the HIGH museum and the Woodruff Art Center, and the Georgia Aquarium We also have great live entertainment so we have to go to a concert or visit a local restaurant/bar for drinks and live music.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout my mother, Kimberly Bowen. She’s a phenomonal person and mother, she’s a great therapist and counselor and all of my life, I’ve watched her work hard to pursue her dreams and succeed.
