We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany “MsDevotedTiff” Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany “MsDevotedTiff”, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued a creative career, because I believed in my level of creativity and the style in which I deliver my stories. I have seen and experienced the fact that women, especially black women are misunderstood and sometimes even frowned upon for being more than one thing. If you’re a career woman, you can’t be a performing artist. If you attend church, you can’t wear bikinis. If you’re nerdy, you can’t possibly know any City Girl lyrics. It was important to me to create for, and represent the woman that, surprises people just by being in her own skin; the woman that, people haven’t taken time to get to know, because they saw her in one element and don’t think there’s much to her and don’t think she can have layers. This woman has many stories and experiences and I enjoy using humor, sarcasm, dance and film, to tell them. My hope is that it will give permission to show all their layers unpologatically, and to make all those that are underestimated, feel seen.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Screenwriter and Creative Director, who creates “for the culture.” In the past 3 years since I launched my brand, MsDevotedTiff and my production company, MsDevotedTiff Productions, I have produced over 100 skits, parodies, dance visuals, unique pieces of social media content and short films. As a result, I have been screened/been a finalist in numerous film festivals, have went viral, and received recognition from many of my heroes and unofficial mentors in the performing arts and entertainment industry. And I’m just getting started. To get to where I am, took guts. I had no formal training, limited time, an even more limited budget, and only a handful of support. To overcome this, I taught myself as much as I could, I had to reduce my social life and increase my discipline, I had to budget well and I had to turn a deaf ear to those that wouldn’t help or wanted to continue to minimalize my talents. I’ve learned that, just because the people around you don’t see it for you, doesn’t mean you’re not talented, it just means they can’t see past what they think of you based off of their limited vision. Focus on what you know is inside of you, focus on the support you do have and figure it out. If one way doesn’t work, try another. If it takes longer then you thought, just keep working and waiting for the moment where things start coming together. If you don’t have all the resources you think you need to start, start anyway and add as you go. People can see talent, even if the bells and whistles are missing. That just shows them, that if she can produce that without a budget, just imagine what she can do with a budget! I want to world to know, that I am representing black women that don’t see themselves represented as much. Everything I do is to make sure the quirky, corny, blerd, cute but not an IG model, God fearing by not defined by what “the church” says that looks like, women feel seen. The world may think it’s not much to you because they don’t know the layers you have. But they will see them through me. My story is, nothing went as planned but it was ok, i figured out another way.
I have recently expanded my community and I now also create custom content for brands I want to use humor to market themselves on social media, and for creatives that want original constant written just for them to showcase themselves.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Brunch for sure at either J Christopher’s or Goose Feathers cafe, followed by one of many historic tours from a black history tour or a ghost tour (because im into that creepy stuff). We have many roof top bars but I enjoy Top Deck and The Lost Square. And while we’re near Broughton street and City Market, let’s do some great shopping of Georgia made productsIf there’s time we could cruise down the river or enjoy the views and Tybee Island, Beach. Lunch would be at the Flying Monkey or ODs Seafood. Dinner would be at Vic’s on the River or the Pink House. Then we can top the night off at the Jazz Cafe.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out Will Eriden of Eriden Images for being the Director of Photography & Editor for all of my MsDevotedTiff Productions films. His willingness to embrace my ideas as a writer and creative director and his support of my journey to bring my stories to life, has made all the difference. His quality of work, eye for details and professionalism is a large part of the success I’ve had thus far.
