We had the good fortune of connecting with Tiffany C. Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tiffany C., why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I knew early on that I wanted to pursue an artistic career since I was in the fourth grade. Back then I wanted to be a cartoonist. Me and a close friend created our own comic strip and would add to it every day. We thought it was fun and the coolest thing to do, because no one else was doing this! As I got older, I nurtured my talent. I taught myself calligraphy and with the help of my mother and grandmother (both were educators in the local school system), became sought after by teachers and educators at the end of every school year to write names on certificates for their students. As much as I thought about and even started my college career at Clark Atlanta University, to pursue a degree in a field that was non-creative, everything I did came back around to something that was creative. If that wasn’t a clear sign, I don’t know what is; I decided to pursue a career in the creative field.
I left CAU and enrolled in the Art Institute of Atlanta to study Graphic Design, Visual Effects and Motion Graphics. It has been non-stop ever since. I have worked as a Graphic Designer, Film and Video Editor both freelance and in the corporate world. Just recently, I decided to pivot my career towards the film and television industry in Graphics.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I do still love to edit film and video and have even edited three feature films in the last couple of years, however, I’m most excited about pursuing my Graphic Design career in the film industry. I started out as an intern in the Art department on a feature film this summer. It was because the work I did was really good and spoke for itself, I was encouraged to pursue my career even further. Since then, on the recommendation from an Art Director from the previous film, I was hired to work on another feature film as an Art Assistant; and now, looking forward to starting my next job on another feature film, early 2022, where I will get the opportunity to show off more of my graphic design skills. Building great relationships along the way helps tremendously when you’re trying to advance your career in this industry.
I can tell you; it has been a journey. It has not been easy, and I had no idea I would end up where I am today. It took a lot of soul searching, long conversations with my very, very close friends and encouraging words from my mother. I’m glad the career I chose doesn’t have an age limit. Therefore, you’re never too old to go after your dreams. I’ve been at this for a long time and have paid my dues to get to where I am today. I still have a way to go, but I’m here. I made it. Everything has finally come full circle. The one lesson I’ve learned, and is an on-going lesson is to never give up. I must admit, there have been times when I wanted to give up. Now that I have been given the opportunity to go after my dream career, nothing can stop me.
Being a Graphic Designer allows you to be creative in so many different realms of the creative world. You’re always thinking of the next creative thing you would like to do. I’m constantly learning and making sure I am on top of the latest trends in my field. I taught myself the basics of photography which helped me enhance my retouching skills with photos and images. When I was a teenager, oil pastel artwork that I created was sold at local art shows; I also was commissioned to create the lapel pin and cover of the program for an AAU Jr. Track and Field Olympics event as well. I most recently authored several coloring books, for both children and adults that can be found on Amazon.com. In doing so, took me back to the days when I was a child that loved to color and draw; yet another accomplishment I’m most proud of and excited about.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is always something to do here in Atlanta. There’s great vibes and energy in the Krog Street Market area and along the Beltline. I love to visit the Botanical Gardens especially during the holiday season when they present “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” and Cocktails in the Garden. One of my favorite spots to eat when I want some good Burnt Ends BBQ is SmokeJack BBQ, located in downtown Alpharetta. Then what better way to end the day with some great shopping in Avalon. Atlanta and the surrounding cities are so diverse, you can always find something to get into that everyone can enjoy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
All my life, I have my family to thank for supporting me, encouraging me, and recommending me for artistic projects and jobs. My mother, grandmother, and my uncle, who unfortunately are no longer with me, were all instrumental in the start of my career in the creative field. My grandmother got me started by doing things for her, for our family church. I would design programs, make posters, or write things in calligraphy. Both my mother and uncle were actors in the theater and in the film and television industry. Although they tried to get me “in front of the camera” –and I did, however, I quickly realized I’d rather be “behind the camera”–so to speak. It was later, when I learned to edit film and video while studying Graphic Design at the Art Institute of Atlanta. I had no idea this would be leading me to a fulfilling career path as a graphic designer for film and television, coming to a screen near you!
