We had the good fortune of connecting with Tekia Powell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tekia, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
SexiMei is a post-surgical garment brand that was created to introduce a new style during a patient’s post-op journey. I was once a patient myself. After undergoing breast surgery, I struggled with finding a post-op bra that I found attractive. This struggle gave me a new idea and opportunity to provide myself and others who encountered the same struggle. So now we are here, introducing SexiMei.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Currently, I am a Tax Director at one of the top 10 CPA firms in the nation. I’ve been doing taxes for a very long time. Although my career is separate from business venture, being a professional for quite some time has helped me achieve most of my business goals. It’s always important to know how to conduct business and conversations in a professional manner. My career has helped me with my pitch to the doctors I speak to often to introduce SexiMei. My brand will provide variety in style and that’s what separates me from other brands. Starting a business and having a brand is definitely not easy. Having patience is very important. Also, having the right team to assist you with your brand is important as well. SexiMei is designed to give patients confidence and sex appeal during their healing journey. Our goal is to add excitement during their journey while providing comfort which is necessary in these garments.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta definitely offers a lot whether it’s for entrepreneurship or entertainment. I’m a seafood girl myself, so Six Feet Under and Spondivits are my favorite food places. I’m not really a clubbing person but more on the lines of lounging so Whiskey Mistress on a Sunday will always do it for me. During the week I have too much work to do to really party, but Bella is a good spot for a quick drink. Chris is the bomb bartender there. Heyyyy Chris!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout doesn’t go out to one individual person. My shoutout goes out to my supporters who never tried to deter me from my ideas and dreams. I know how hard it is to work to achieve a goal and negativity can really set a person back. So shoutout to anyone and everyone who supports their family and friends on trying to achieve their goals in life.
