We had the good fortune of connecting with Teirah Hicks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Teirah, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business is so complex because it was something I have wanted for myself for a very long time. As a teenager I watched my dad make really good money and live a life of freedom physically and financially. I knew then that I could have a life that I wanted and not just being forced to do things simply to survive. But what really made me take the risk and go for it was my son. After having my son I became a stay at home mom for 2 years before deciding to open my business. I loved being apart of every milestone, while his dad was not due to having to work to provide for us. I disliked feeling like everything was on him including me needing him financially. I also wanted my son to experience a life of freedom where we can travel, and allow myself and his experiences to be his teacher instead of being institutionalized. I believe that we should indeed do what sets our soul or fire and until then do what you can to work towards that freedom.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Perfectly Flawed boutique is a ready to wear women’s brand that focuses on the idea that although you aren’t perfect you are still worthy of all that your heart desires. We seek merchandise that will make you confident and make you stand out. We are located at 5432 w. Atlantic blvd Margate, FL 33063 and online at www.shoppfboutique.com. What sets me apart from others is that I am not just selling clothes, I strive to sell confidence and self love because it does’t matter what you look like, what matters is how you feel. With my background in mental health and my love for fashion I am trying to connect the two. I am most proud that I have opened my brick and mortar and started from the bottom in a place that I am not from all by myself, with my own funding. It was and still isn’t easy. We are still building, growing and learning daily. The most important lessons I’ve learned is to give myself grace and to reward myself for every win. I want the world to know that perfection doesn’t exist and seeking it only drives you crazy. There is so much peace and joy in standing true to who you are and accepting that you are flawed because it is indeed what sets you apart from the rest. I am PERFECTLY FLAWED and stand firm on that. It’s simple. Anything perfect doesn’t need to change, well I am constantly growing and changing and so is my business/brand. The world is perfectly flawed and once we accept that things will make much more since.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh wow this is a good question. For fun we would go on a boat to the sandbar and drink and snack while we enjoy the water and sun. We would visit as many vegan friendly places that we could find. For some other day time fun we would go to The Urban in Miami- my favorite place for a nice vibe. For somewhere cute and for a great aesthetic we would go to the Carousel club in hallandale or The Wharf in Miami or Fort Lauderdale. We would also go to the Colee Hammock in Las olas to have a picnic near the water under one of the big trees- do some meditation/ yoga. We may do brunch in Las Olas at Louie Bossi’s. Lastly we would try to have some super fun at BB Sundays at America’s back yard also in Las Olas. I don’t get to go out often but when I do make time for it, I love outdoor cute day time fun where I can get dressed up and be seen you know enjoying myself and living for the moment.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The main people that I can give credit to is my family and my true friends. I moved to South, Florida by myself and they have done everything to support me from where they are (Baltimore, MD). Without them I would not be where I am. whenever I think about giving up, they remind me of my strength and why I started this journey. From my greatest accomplishments to the smallest ones they are always rooting for me. Their love and support is what keeps me going because I want to be successful for them as much as I want it for myself.
