We had the good fortune of connecting with Taryn Wharwood and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taryn, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking to me, is centered around faith. Not necessarily religiously, just spiritually. It is a matter of overcoming the negative things we tell ourselves to fulfill whatever purpose we are here to fulfill. I believe that my purpose is to create. Through poetry, through performance, through entertaining, through spoken word. Being aware of my purpose, I constantly battle within myself about taking risks. The fear of judgement or misunderstanding and the simultaneous feeling of magic and power. If i hadn’t taken the many many risks that I did and continue to, I wouldn’t be the person that I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I create based off of my own desires to make a difference. The desire to create something that doesn’t currently exist. I like being an innovator. I believe that’s what sets me a part. I love the challenge of creating and curating something new that the audience has never seen. Seeing the audience’s reaction at every event is what keeps me going. It truly warms my heart hearing how a particular event or poem or something I’ve said has impacted someone positively. That is what makes the journey worth it. The challenges, the disappointment, the climb become easier to bear when you attach your actions to understanding that all that you are doing is bigger than you.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are far too many people/angels that I could mention who have helped me along the way. I will say this, my first and constant support has been my mother. She is my first shero, my first example of love. My first and consistent example of strength, courage and wisdom. Who I am today is nothing without her!
