We had the good fortune of connecting with Taraza Tyler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taraza, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
One the most difficult decisions that I have ever had to make was accepting that fact that I will give birth to my daughter as a single mother. You never wake up or give birth thinking that you will be raising a child alone. Being a single mother is hard but it is so rewarding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
P.O.W.E.R., Inc. Community, focuses on Parents Owning Wealth Through Education and Resiliency. We are a nonprofit organization with a mission to plug educational and economic resources, such as but not limited to, scholarships and financial assistance in the single parent community. Our purpose of P.O.W.E.R., Inc. Community is to enrich single parents through the power of unity by mentoring, community services, and networking events while helping them recognize their potential to attain excellence through the journey of parenthood. Our nonprofit sets us apart as we focus on a variety of parents- those that may be single mothers, single fathers, caregivers, and foster parents. We have partnered with other nonprofit organizations that specialize in home ownership, counseling, financial assistance, accounting, and navigating higher education. I am most proud of the partnerships that we have gained and the families that we have supported this year. It’s truly mind blowing! (Wipes Eyes)

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a couple of days, I would take them to the beach. The most interesting thing about North Carolina and South Carolina is that we have several beaches. The itinerary would  consist of breakfast at First Watch, massages and mimosa at Vole’ Massage Company, pack a picnic, head to the beach, and maybe explore the great town of Wilmington, North Carolina or Charleston, South Carolina. It really depends on the time my best friend visits me.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a huge shoutout to my board members of P.O.W.E.R., Inc. Community. It is truly hard to find like-minded individuals that truly believe in serving the community and overall, just supporting other women. I am truly nothing without my board. After I lost my father in October, the board members stepped in to help other single parents and caregivers with the proper tools to go from surviving to thriving. I would like to give a huge shoutout and thank you to Sade Thompson, Vice President, Valencia Faulkner, Director of Finances, Ashley Dew, Director of Fundraising, Necolby Burt, Director of Educational Resources, and Shaina Pryor Jenkins, Director of Mental Health Services. Ladies, thank you so much for serving the parent community with me! We are the PLUG!
