Meet Tammy Washington, Ph.D. | Founder and CEO of The SMG Lady

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tammy Washington, Ph.D. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tammy, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Not only is The SMG Lady a small business, it is a platform to share education and awareness within the community. Through the production and sale of sea moss gel and raw sea moss, my business has an opportunity to introduce its benefits to the community. We promote the importance of health and wellness, educate people about the natural benefits of sea moss, and bring ideas to the forefront about the ways in which we can begin to take better care of ourselves; to become stronger physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been working in the healthcare industry for over 24 years. Climbing the ranks within the walls of Corporate America is not easy, especially for someone that looks like me. Through hard work, perseverance, dedication and sacrifice, I have been able to achieve great accomplishments, and I have more to go LOL! We all have those moments of reflection where we make note of some lessons learned right? As I embark on the age of 51, I have learned to trust myself, be confident in who I am and what I believe in, and lead with power, grace and humility…understanding that everything may not go as planned. It’s important to have the ability to course-correct as needed.

Aside from the corporate life, I launched my own business during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. As it attacked us and changed our lives, I felt compelled to take action to ensure that I was fit to fight off this deadly virus. With a Ph.D. in Community Engagement, I reverted back to my practices and began my research. As it started to take shape, I did what I do most – think beyond myself. How can I help others build up their immune systems and learn more about the benefits of sea moss, and how can I positively impact the communities around me? This is bigger than me! I began making sea moss gel for the masses and in 6 days, my business was born – The SMG Lady.

The SMG Lady (SMG for sea moss gel) is a brand which demonstrates happiness, satisfaction, and self worth. Our goal is not to just enhance your health and wellness, but also to inspire, encourage and empower the lives of our customers, leaving them with more than just a good impression. It is our desire to change lives and give hope and optimism.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Here in my steel city of Pittsburgh, I’d be sure we’d take in the view from Mt. Washington, enjoy some good eats from several amazing restaurants. The night life would consist of a nice Jazz spot in Shadyside or a live band playing at the casino. I’d have to build in a day of shopping and of course some R & R with a day at the spa for treatments to acknowledge the queens that we are LOL!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a special shoutout to my family, close friends, and of course my sister circle. Each of them have poured into me and encouraged me throughout this journey. Some of them are the very reason why I came to realize the importance of taking optimal care of myself. We cannot do it alone. I believe in a stronge village and am blessed to have one surrounding me in everything I do.
