We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamika Michelle Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamika Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I launched Platinum Connections because of my own personal experience in dating and relationships as an attorney, along with other countless successful women that I knew who were struggling in their love lives. For many successful women, especially women of color, the more accomplished you are, the more challenging it becomes to find compatible partners who are on a similar professional and financial level as you. Repeated disappointments often lead to these women “settling” and ending up in unhealthy relationships or situationships. They fear being alone, so they oftentimes compromise their values and principles and are stressed and emotionally drained.
It absolutely breaks my heart to see both men and women who are, what I call “perfect on paper,” struggling in their romantic lives and I wanted to create a matchmaking agency for successful professionals to do my part in connecting them with one another. I transformed my own approach to dating and relationships at 40 years old, which resulted in me getting married to a great guy less than a year later at 41 years old and having two healthy children shortly thereafter. I love sharing my journey with others because it gives so many people, especially women, encouragement that you can truly have the love that you deserve, but there’s a way to do it correctly.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am super excited about the fact that I was able to create a “Business of Dating” framework to make it easier for high achieving professionals to become more intentional about dating to connect with other like-minded individuals. Being able to apply many of the same principles that have made people successful in their careers, professions, and businesses makes so much sense. No more leaving your love life up to chance. Once you know the methodology of the “Business of Dating,” dating becomes exciting again because you have a roadmap that you can follow. Once you know what to do, and you do it consistently, then you can find a quality partner that much sooner.
However, the journey to get to where I am today was not a straight or easy path, and unbeknownst to me, it all started over 20 years ago before I even became an attorney. After graduating from college but before beginning law school, I began planning a dating service. I stopped short of launching it though because I enrolled in law school as being a lawyer was something that I wanted to do since I was a kid.
Unfortunately, I had to go through my own relationship woes as an attorney, despite attaining career and financial success, before I could be in the position to help other professionals who are in my former situation. So, after being a lawyer for 15 years, getting married, and having children later in life I became a certified matchmaker.
When I initially launched “Platinum Connections” though, I had an issue connecting with potential clients. The reality is, as successful men and women who are used to overcoming almost every barrier that they encounter, we don’t want to admit that we need help when it comes to their personal lives. We don’t want to admit that we’re scared of being alone, so we tolerate unacceptable behavior from partners thinking that we can change the other person and how they treat us. Additionally, we don’t want to admit failure, so we stay in unhealthy relationships.
So, as I was rethinking my business approach, I began to connect with other highly successful innovators and entrepreneurs who are extremely accomplished. After telling my journey and dating strategies to them, both men and women tell me how needed my matchmaking services are for professionals. And again, my “Business of Dating” strategies resonate well with very focused, business-minded individuals.
I’ve learned so many things along the way though and showing up consistently for your clients and potential clients is key. I had to become comfortable with sharing my life. Not just the good, but the bad and ugly too – and I have experienced all of those things both personally and professionally. Showing that you’ve overcome those challenges is what makes us relatable to our clients, and even more passionate about seeing them succeed in all areas of their lives.
Platinum Connections is not just the name of our agency. It’s a lifestyle. We do offer matchmaking services for high-net-worth individuals, but we also have a magazine to further connect our clients and readers with the best in business. Every connection we make may not be a love connection, however, there is always an opportunity to connect with someone professionally down the line. Our clients are all so high value that they either fall in love with one another or love each other’s business acumen.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
OMG! Considering that my life is totally different than it was 5 years ago, and I haven’t been anywhere in forever, I would definitely do my best to show Atlanta off to visitors. With that being said, I’m sure to include some oldie but goodie spots.
Sunday – Atlanta Belt-line – It’s a great way to explore the city and get some fresh air, exercise, and vitamin D all at the same time
Monday – City Winery – Because it’s such a cool spot, with good drinks and musical guests
Tuesday – Slutty Vegan – We all need a meatless day and their food is oh so tasty
Wednesday – Mellow Mushroom (Downtown Atlanta) – It’s Mellow Mushroom – how can you not check it out while in Atlanta?!?! Good beer if you like it and relaxing outside
Thursday – Cala Bar & Grill – They have great live music and amazing food! Especially the Jerk Chicken Pasta and Bread
Pudding!
Friday – Ice Bar in South Atlanta – I love 90’s R&B and Hip-Hop and it’s Old School Fridays here serving up all the best 90’s music!
Saturday – Downtown Decatur – You can shop, eat, drink, get a little history in, and just chill there, whether it’s during the day or night
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, I would have to shoutout my husband. More than just two people who love each other, we are truly friends and partners. Not only is he amazingly supportive of my plans, ideas, and ventures as a friend, but he is also my computer and technical expert – which is an area that I am clueless about. He is an integral part of my business and is a tremendous help in setting up my systems and processes to make things flow a little easier.
