Meet Tamek Carey | Comedian and Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamek Carey and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamek, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
In 2020, my youngest son graduated from high school, leaving me pondering, “What now?” The pandemic forced me to slow down, granting me ample time. Despite being a Branch Manager at a financial institution and working during the shutdown, I found myself with extra time at home. This led me to venture into making natural products after stumbling upon a TikTok recipe. Inspired by a woman making body butter and deodorant, I decided to give it a try. The process was so enjoyable that I started sharing the products with friends and colleagues. With time on my side, I delved into courses and books on product formulation, expanding from two products to twelve. As friends and acquaintances inquired about purchasing more, my business was born.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I began my comedy journey in 2012, initially for a charity event. A young lady sought out amateur mothers for a comedy fundraiser for Breast Cancer, and my name came up due to my humorous Facebook posts. Reluctant at first, I eventually agreed after some persuasion. From that nerve-wracking first show where the audience laughed, I began to consider pursuing comedy further. Until 2021, I only performed when called upon by that same young lady. In 2021, after successfully launching my business, Love Sharon, I found the confidence to revisit comedy. Thanks to my mentor, Steve Brown, I have been granted unique opportunities as a beginner. His guidance has greatly improved my stage presence. Every performance is a serious commitment for me – I approach it with focus, punctuality, and professionalism. It’s always rewarding to hear people express surprise at my humor, given my demeanor offstage. What makes me stand out is my dedication to honing my craft daily. I experiment with new material on platforms like TikTok and reels, using audience reactions as feedback to refine my content.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I adore Tuscaloosa! While some may claim there’s not much to do here, I find downtown Tuscaloosa to be charming. The array of restaurants, bars, and live entertainment always entices me to return for more.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My aunt Trudy My friend Kerri Ash
