We had the good fortune of connecting with Tamara Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tamara, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Onyx Bookstore Cafe LLC was a vision i had for over 30 yrs. I wanted to have a space that had all the things I love ; books, coffee, baked goods and Art. My mother passed in 2017. She blessed my siblings and myself with an inheritance. That was the catalyst that allowed me to pursue my vision. When your doing something that can impact the community and make you happy! Your winning. Thank you momma for your blessings
What should our readers know about your business?
Onyx Bookstore Cafe is a black owned bookstore that’s strives to serve and be a source for the community. We opened our doors 1 month before the shutdown and that was a setback but we had a moment of increase in business during the Racial injustice killing of George Floyd. It was a double edge sword we needed the business but didn’t like the way it came. Being the first and only black bookstore in our community is what sets us a part.
The learning process is an ongoing process. I’m thankful for the booksellers community they’ve been a great help.
I want people to know that your dreams are not meant to stay dreams. They are the seeds planted and you have to water them to make it a reality.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well of course they would first come to onyx Bookstore Cafe..lol then I would take them to get their self love on at SkinWorks Day Spa get a massage or facial. Then eat some yummy Mexican food ( I’m a foodlover) at Bella Vista. Take a drive to the farmers market.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Mom and Dad and my ancestors And my daughter’s whom I do this for. To leave an example for them to find their passion and pursue it
