We had the good fortune of connecting with Talyn Hohneke and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Talyn, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I have only seriously entertained two career paths my whole life: marine biology or art. When it became obvious that science and math are unavoidably intertwined, and that there were other ways to save the whales, I happily chose art. The possibilities in an artistic career are truly endless- one day you might find yourself helping a small business develop a visual identity, and the next you could be painting the side of a sky scraper. Art gets people talking. It brings people together by breaking down otherwise invincible barriers. Art heals my soul, and guides my journey in life. I want my career to be focused on making art accessible to those who need it and building sustainable community.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As the Gallery Manager of Buckhead Art & Company, it is my dream come true to work with and represent the artists of Atlanta. No one has an easy time trying to get where they are going, but I would personally say I typically enjoy arriving at the destination and collect fond memories along the way. I think I am in a “collecting memories” phase of things. I have a few big dreams that I am working towards, but enjoy where I am immensely. I have a lot to learn, and I am around a great team of people to learn with. I have many destinations to get to some day, and today the sun is shining beautifully through the front-windows of the Gallery as I type this. My hope for the world is to have safe spaces for art and community to thrive in. Buckhead Art & Company is one of those places.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is truly one of the best cities to explore. It is green, and alive. I love Krog Street Tunnel (take some paint). East Atlanta Village is always a good time; Grab some delicious food at Argosy and if there’s a drag show at Mary’s you’d better go. Torched Hop has the best wings and craft beer, but I know that’s a hot topic (one I’d love to discuss). In my opinion though, what makes Atlanta a diamond in the rough is the beauty of the forest we live in. The best way to really understand who Atlanta is to throw a tube in the Chattahoochee River and float; or to hike Sope Creek, Sweetwater and Indian Seats. Then to see the intersection of Atlanta and the beautiful people who live here, you walk the Beltline.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Buckhead Art & Company has been a source of creative connection for me since I started as the Gallery Assistant in 2019. Fast-forward to 2024, and I have been led by two incredible Gallery Owners, connected with hundreds of artists from all over the world, and met/learned from the incredible art community of Atlanta. Karimah McFarlane, the current owner of Buckhead Art & Company, has opened my mind to what community and collaboration can really mean. How simple it can be to bring people together when art is the focal point. She shoots for the sun, the moon and the stars and leaves a contrail of change as she blazes off to discover some other part of the cosmos- inviting everyone who wants to come along the way.
