We had the good fortune of connecting with Ta’kara Mitchell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ta’Kara, how do you think about risk?
My mom and I have a bible verse that we love so much that we turned into a motto. “Walk by faith, not by sight.” – 2 Corinthians 5:7. The older I get, the more I understand this phrase. In the industry of creative careers, you automatically take risks, and you have to walk into them with faith in your vision. Without risk, we can’t evoke/bring about change nor inspire and keep the creativity within uniqueness alive.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I believe my open-mindedness and appreciation for a variety of different creative outlets distinguish myself in my field. I consistently strive to improve my skills driven by commitment to personal and professional growth. I’m most excited about contributing to the industries I hope to step into by making new connections, and collaborating to bring both my vision and those of others into existence. Since I was a little girl, I’ve always been inspired by the representation of individuals like myself doing remarkable things, and I am dedicated to creating a safe place for diverse voices to uniquely express themselves. That’s how art is made. While the creative industry is full of a multitude of challenges- such as writer’s block and the inevitable disappointments and no’s you come across during a pursuit of passion such as performance- knowing you put your all into it is rewarding enough and brings a sense of fulfillment there. I overcame those challenges by prayer, reflection, and drawing inspiration from my surroundings.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Right now I’m currently in Savannah,GA. Firstly, I’d take us to my favorite little coffee spot, Henny’s Penny Art space & Cafe or Origin Coffee Shop (which is my favorite place to go study.) There we could grab a coffee, sit outside for a bit, chat, and observe the environment. After that, we could take a small walk around the city’s squares, or maybe even a little picnic over at Forsyth Park. There’s always something happening there! Depending on the season, we could run into a little festival there or the Farmer’s market that happens on Saturday mornings. I love the Farmer’s Market because it’s many artists selling their crafts, and small privately-owned businesses you can support. For dinner later on that evening, we could grab a little burrito from Java Burrito down Broughton Street.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My support system has always been top-notch. Firstly, I have to thank the Lord who even blessed me with my mindset and gifts to begin with. My mom (Angel), Aunt (Kameke), Uncle (Bryant), Grandparents (Johnnie and Sarah), my mentor (Betty Bobbitt) and family as a whole, have always encouraged me to do what I love and to keep doing it. Then there were the teachers I’ve encountered in my life, that cared enough to give me a voice, see my potential, and help me to keep striving toward it. Lastly, my best friends, who continue to be my found family in addition to my own, where we constantly seek to support each other and take care of each other.
