We had the good fortune of connecting with T C and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi T, how do you think about risk?
I believe that when you take risks you’re betting on yourself. When taking risk there’s only two options failure or success or Loss or gain. When taking risk you are believing in the unknown in hopes it works out in your favor. I think that risks are apart of everyone’s journey especially entrepreneurs and business women/men. Risks have always been apart of my career since the very beginning. I took a risk by leaving undergrad without anyone’s knowledge in a quest to change my career path to become a cosmetologist. I took risk early on with faith always in my back pocket. I am reaping so many of the benefits from the risks that I wasn’t afraid to take. The risks I took haven’t always been successful but even when the outcome wasn’t what I expected; looking back they were always beneficial. Overall knowing what risk to take are important as it’s essential to both your growth and success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a hairstylist that specializes in natural hair care and protective styling. What set me from others is my how I deal with my clients and how I make them feel. I truly care about their hair and don’t just look at them as customers or even clients but my hair family. One of the things I am most proud of is my networking event called “Strange Fruit” I founded StrangeFruit Events in 2014. It’s an annual networking event that brings black and brown creatives together. I give a space for others to show off their talents and their businesses. My event inspire others to be great and do what they love and for me that’s the biggest reward. Inspiring others. I am most excited about my Hair Oil that I launched last fall. I’m a stickler for healthy hair and growth so I created a product that would help people with that!! I got to where I am today professionally by prayer, hard work and discipline. It wasn’t easy but when you know what you want out of life and how you want your life to go you’ll do any and everything that is conducive to help achieve that. I fell many times but always got back up after. I overcame challenges by never feeling sorry for myself and always finding a solution. Always trying to find ways to make things work and never giving up. Some lessons I learned along the way are you get back what you put in and that the little wins matter. I want the world to know that I never stopped betting on myself and that I took all of the not so good things in my story to help develop the good things in it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I was to take a friend out I would show them all of the perks of NYC not just the tourist attractions but the things that I love to do and places I love to go. I would go to Brooklyn Bridge park for a picnic, Soho for shopping. We’ll go to a pop up exhibit because there is always one in town. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout-out to someone so dear to my life, heart and story. My late friend Tahja Ferguson. Tahja gave me strength and confidence to go forward with all of the hard decisions I had to make. She believed in me when no one else truly did and saw the vision that I saw and always held me to that. I am forever indebted to her as she plays a big role in who TC is and how TCHairChronicles came about.
