We had the good fortune of connecting with SyRae and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi SyRae, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose an artistic and creative career over college because I wanted to excel in something that truly resonated with my passion. Although I always performed well in school, I craved greatness in a field I genuinely loved. Initially, I considered culinary arts, but after working in restaurants, I realized it wasn’t my calling. Then, I discovered barber school, where I learned how to transform my hobby into a business and be my own boss—and I was all in!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At my barbershop, I don’t just offer precision haircuts, beard grooming, and scalp treatments—I create experiences that boost confidence and celebrate individual style. Every cut is a chance to refine someone’s personal expression while making them feel truly seen and valued.

What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to growth and adaptation. From practicing on my own head at twelve to showcasing my work at top hair shows, I’ve continually pushed the boundaries of my craft. I keep up with the latest trends and techniques, always ensuring that every service is tailored to the unique needs and lifestyle of my clients.

My career as a barber has its perks—it’s incredibly rewarding, and I truly couldn’t ask for a better career. However, this profession requires discipline and determination. My journey hasn’t been without challenges. One of the most defining moments came in 2020 during a Christmas party when I struggled with a painful wrist and swollen hand—a wake-up call that led me to urgent care and a diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome. Facing the possibility of losing my craft, I fought back by embracing physical therapy and training my left hand to compensate for my injured right. This tough period taught me about resilience, mental strength, and the importance of adaptability in the face of adversity.

Today, I’m not just a barber; I’m a passionate artist who has overcome obstacles to keep doing what I love. I’m proud of my journey and excited to bring my clients not only excellent grooming services but also a warm, inclusive atmosphere where every visit feels like a step toward empowerment. My story is one of perseverance and passion, and I hope it inspires others to pursue their dreams despite the challenges that come their way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Let’s say my best friend is in town for a week—here’s how I’d show them the real Atlanta vibe:

Day 1: Start your morning at breakfast Boys for there chicken and waffles, then explore Midtown’s art and architecture. In the evening, enjoy authentic soul food at Busy Bee Café.

Day 2: Cruise the Atlanta BeltLine by day, stopping at pop-up markets and eclectic shops. For lunch, hit up a local Tassili’s Raw Reality Café. Later, catch the sunset Piedmont park—an ideal spot to capture Atlanta’s cool, urban spirit.

Day 3: Immerse in history with a visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park, then refuel with a hearty meal at another Busy Bee Cafe. Wrap up the day with live music at a downtown venue.

Day 4: Spend the day exploring Little Five Points—dig through vintage shops and independent galleries. Enjoy lunch at Slutty Vegan before unwinding with craft cocktails at a trendy bar.

Day 5: Dive into Atlanta’s creative scene by visiting local artist studios and innovative barber shops. Grab dinner at an Apt 4B that’s as rich in flavor as Atlanta’s culture.

Day 6: Discover the vibe of East Atlanta Village, with its cool street art and community energy. Savor a relaxed brunch at a neighborhood gem, then hit up a local market for handmade finds.

Day 7: For your farewell, enjoy a delicious Southern brunch at Breakfast at Barney’s , take one last stroll through Piedmont Park, and soak in the city’s vibrant energy before you head out.

Each day mixes culture, history, great food from black-owned restaurants, and unforgettable experiences that truly capture what makes Atlanta unique.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to give a big shoutout to the alternative high school program that first sparked my passions for culinary arts and barbering. I also want to thank all of my parents—yes, plural—because, as the saying goes, it truly takes a village. So many people have contributed to making me the well-rounded adult I am today, and I’m deeply grateful for their support.

To my brothers: you were incredible hair models, teaching me patience as a barber. My best friend, who has become family over our 16-year friendship, pushed me to commit fully to my craft, even when I doubted my skills—you saw my potential when I couldn’t.

Lastly, a special thank you to a high school classmate who, back when I was just starting out, paid five dollars for a haircut in his basement. Your kindness and honest, constructive criticism helped me grow and perfect my skills. Thank you, everyone, for being a part of my story!
