We had the good fortune of connecting with Sylvia Floyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sylvia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I honestly feel like you have not lived life to the fullest if you have not taken risk. I mean I’m originally from Louisiana where there’s a lot of casinos, so I started taking risk at an early age lol. When you take risk, you will either succeed or fail. But if you never take risk, you do not even get the opportunity to fail, and failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing because it’s something you can learn from and grow from. you can miss out on many opportunities by not taking risk. Most people problem is they do not like to take risk. But honestly how can you fully develop that way? Taking risk is what landed me into success. I took a risk by quitting my job, moving from Louisiana to Houston in November 2015 with just $500 in my pocket a paid for vehicle and sleeping on a friend’s couch for a couple of months with one family member in Houston, so that was a big risk, but I knew I was destined for something greater. I had a plan, and I took a risk and I have been self-employed since 2017. It was the best decision I ever made. So, I always encourage people to take risk. Taking risk gets you places that being scared will never take you!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a mini barbershop called Next Level Fades. What sets me apart from others I would say is my customer service and knowledge of the craft. Some people just cut hair and me I study hair making sure my clients are knowledgeable about their hair and as far as the do’s and don’ts. I like to give people an experience. I got to where I am now by being dedicated and losing a lot of sleep. Working day and night to get where I wanted to be in life. The bible says “Faith without work is dead” I live by that. My faith has taken me further life than I could have ever imagined and the work I put in solidified my success. It has definitely been a tough road, but I would not change the path I have taken for nothing because I am beyond blessed. I have overcome every obstacle by not quitting and pushing through even when I felt like giving up. Daily affirmations helped me then and still today. People don’t like to believe what they can’t see in the moment but for anyone that’s reading there is light at the end of the tunnel. When people see me, I want them to know that even though they see the successful version of me there was a time when I was scraping up .99 cent for a hot n spicy living in Atlanta, so just know I worked my butt off to get where I am especially being on my own since I was 16. I knew what I wanted in life, and I was hungry for success and that along will put you in a good mindset. I put myself in a position, to win and I’ve been winning, and I thank God for that shift and the strength it took to carry me to become successful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
It depends on what city we’re talking about lol since I no longer live in Atlanta. If we’re talking ATL then my favorite place to go may seem a little lame. I’m definitely going to Piedmont Park. I love midtown so we’d probably bar hop around midtown. I love the daiquiri factory, Joe’s on Juniper, G’s midtown, Blake’s on the park, etc. We would go shopping at Lenox Mall. Probably hang out in Camp Creek as well Buckhead. If we’re speaking about Houston, TX that’s a whole other level. We would go to Surf side beach, have brunch on Sunday Phil and Derek’s, do day parties, etc. We would eat at the Turkey Leg hut, and several other places it’s just so much to do!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother Mattie, Father Jerry, my mother Patricia, my cousin Francesca, my fiancée Lorin, and the Army!!
