We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydnie Wainland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sydnie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Influenced by my upbringing in our family’s metal fabrication business, I was inspired to create works on a smaller scale. Having the opportunity to work with fine metals at the age of twelve, showed me endless possibilities of what could be created with such a rigid material. After graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design, I created Sydnie Ellen LLC with the intent to share my works in my local community! Noticing a gap in the market, I was determined to create affordable luxury jewelry where each piece is 100% one-of-a-kind.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Often referencing organic forms, my jewelry reflects the delicate, yet powerful intricacies found only in nature. During my time in college, I experimented with unusual materials to help in the lost wax casting process. Through that experimentation, I discovered a new approach that allowed me to create organic flowing forms that were both lightweight and visually different from anything I had seen.

Discovering my aesthetic was a challenge, especially being in a very saturated field. It can be difficult to set yourself apart from others, but I recognized early on that there is an untapped market where luxury meets affordability. Being adaptable is key! The market is always changing so being open to change is a must.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
From hidden bars to new restaurants, Savannah has expanded into a hub for new restaurants and shops. Being in a very art-centered town, there are exhibitions constantly popping up around the city, especially by SCAD students and alumni. If you want to experience the history of Savannah, I’d recommend going to the Wormsloe Plantation to see the beautiful Spanish moss trees and learn the history of the area.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d love to give a shoutout to my family! They truly are the reason why I constantly push myself to create. At the age of four, I knew that I wanted to pursue art, but as I got older I had no idea what specifically I wanted to do. After lots of different art programs, I had the opportunity to work with metal and fell in love with it! From there on out, I focused all of my efforts on learning different techniques within the jewelry field. I could not have done any of this without the support of my family and for that, I am so greatful.
