We had the good fortune of connecting with Syd Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Syd, how has your background shaped the person you are today?

I come from a small town called Jackson, Georgia, located just an hour south of Atlanta. My childhood was mostly spent in my father’s pawn shop, a business that has been a part of our family for as long as I can remember. Alongside running the pawn shop, my father embarked on various other ventures, allowing me to witness his entrepreneurial spirit firsthand.

Growing up in the pawn shop exposed me to a world of fascinating objects and incredible stories. I had the privilege of hearing captivating tales from customers while surrounded by an assortment of unique wares to come into the store. However, what truly left a lasting impression on me was observing my father’s skill in negotiation. Day in and day out, he would engage in deal-making, finding ways to ensure both parties walked away satisfied. It was through this experience that I gained a valuable understanding of how to create win-win situations at an early age.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Syd Howell Presents is the culmination of my years of experience as a regional talent buyer, niche festival producer, and unyielding dreamer.

In 2018, I founded this company with a resolute mindset: to continue curating mid-sized festivals and bringing electrifying underground metal and rock shows to our town. Those initial years were a success, as we honed our skills and gained invaluable insights on running our business. However, just as we were hitting our stride, the pandemic struck, abruptly halting everything in its tracks.

Determined to keep the momentum going, we pivoted our efforts towards producing engaging online content, such as the unforgettable “Slaughter Que Late Night Extravaganza.” This creative endeavor not only entertained our audience but also sparked the birth of the SHP podcast, aptly titled “Talkin’ Shit with Syd.” Currently, we are in the process of revamping the show, eagerly anticipating the release of numerous captivating episodes.

Now, SHP is fueled by an ambitious goal and unwavering mission—to become a comprehensive multimedia entertainment production company. Our vision encompasses live events, festivals, tours, online shows, and podcasts, all working in synergy to propel both the artists and the shows themselves to new heights..

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a super easy answer because we’ve been doing this for years.

To kick off our evening, we’d head over to Elmyr in Little Five Points for some delicious tacos. It’s a laid-back spot where we can enjoy good food and maybe have a couple of GRiZ to get the party started

If there happens to be a live show going on, we’d make our way to one of Atlanta’s renowned venues like The Masquerade, Earl, 529, or Starbar. It’s always a treat to experience live music and have a few drinks while soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. These venues all have their own unique vibe and we enjoy all of them .

After the show, we’d make a stop at Flatiron EAV for some mouthwatering hot wings. The place has a lively patio, and we might even strike up conversations with some fellow Atlanta natives. Its a melting pot bar after midnight and you never know what you’ll see or hear.

Finally, as the night winds down, it wouldn’t be an Atlanta experience without a visit to the iconic Waffle House. Bam! That’s a wrap

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my journey, there have been numerous individuals who have played a pivotal role in shaping and guiding me. While some have departed from this world and others have drifted apart, each and every one of them has contributed significantly to the path I’ve been on.

I was incredibly fortunate to cross paths with brilliant and influential figures within the Atlanta music scene early on in my career. These connections were all forged through the one and only Masquerade music venue which served as the catalyst for my professional growth.

Without the Masquerade, I would have never had the opportunity to curate an extensive roster of shows, festivals, and events over the years. This invaluable experience allowed me to refine my skills and produce high-quality shows that delighted fans, artists, and staff alike.

I am eternally grateful to the mentors and supporters who have stood by my side throughout the years. Their guidance and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in my journey. A special shout-out goes to the Masquerade, Brian McNamara, Tim Sweetwood, Matthew Darrow , Kurtis Campbell ,Rene Arriagada, Berta Ochs, Greg Green, and all the members from the Masq Goon Squad. Your unwavering support has made all the difference.
