We had the good fortune of connecting with Susana De León and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Susana, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Firstly, I sat down with myself periodically to organize my wants vs needs. Plan out my goals and then decide how I was going to execute over time. Taking opportunities as they came. I woke up early, put in long late hours even if was not getting paid. I knew that would come later. Explored to welcome new experiences and challenges. I sought after people I wanted to be like. Connected with others for mentorship, growth and knowledge.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I deliver luxurious experiences that are a reflection of who I am—not just as a hairstylist, but as a person. I approach every service with intention, making sure my guests feel comfortable, heard, and confident in both my expertise and the space we share.

Building my clientele took time, patience, and consistency. Some of my clients have been with me since high school, and that loyalty means everything to me. I’ve continually invested in advanced education—not just in technical skills, but in communication, emotional intelligence, and body language so I can elevate every interaction, not just the end result.

Over the years, I’ve learned that there’s no substitute for practice and repetition. The more I refined my skills, the more confident and consistent I became. I also realized that showing up fully for my clients means taking care of myself outside the salon. Prioritizing my mental and physical well-being helps me stay grounded, creative, and present with every guest in my chair.

I’m proud of the years of training, certifications, and practice that have brought me to a place where I can now mentor others. Helping new stylists find their passion and drive is something I take seriously. You can teach technique, but you can’t teach heart—and that’s what I bring into every appointment.

What truly sets me apart is how I prepare. I don’t just look at the services on the schedule—I think about each client as a whole person. I reflect on their last visit: how they felt, what they shared, what they were going through or celebrating. When I ask, “How did that interview go?” or “Did your son enjoy his birthday?”, it reminds my clients that I see them.

To me, doing hair is about creating a transformation that aligns with who someone is, or who they’re becoming. It’s an honor to be a part of that journey.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love having visitors! Hanging out at The Battery is always a great time, and fingers crossed there’s a Braves home game. If there is pretty weather, let’s go down The Beltline to walk around, people-watch, or to grab a bite at Buena Vida. I’m a sucker for a good patio and delicious food. There’s always a farmers market to visit, buying fresh goods and supporting small- everyone is happy. We can do a drive up to Monteluce Winery, where we can enjoy mountain views in a dog friendly environment, and wine taste. We can go dancing at El Valle or Palo Santo.
There’s so many things to do, much to decide from and there will always still be more to explore and pop up on the wish list of thing to do.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve thought a lot about this question, because the truth is, my journey started with me. I had to be the one to push forward. I worked multiple jobs, lived on my own, and found a way to survive and grow when things were at their toughest. I learned to rely on myself deeply. But I also know I didn’t get here entirely alone. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have people show up for me. My parents and I have built a relationship of trust and respect and they’re now the ones I can call on for the push to keep going. My mentor of eight years, Daniel saw the potential in me when I couldn’t yet see it for myself. His guidance has helped me build confidence and reach new goals. And my fiancé, Skylar; My biggest supporter; My best friend; who keeps me grounded, helps me breathe, work through stressors and celebrates me at every finish line. While my story began with survival, it’s now grounded in love, guidance and community.
