We had the good fortune of connecting with Sumayya Allen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sumayya, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It’s funny because my thought process was to make something I wanted to have myself but could not find readily available. I love candles and specifically ones made with essential oils that offer an aromatherapy experience. I couldn’t find what I wanted, so I decided to make my own and to create the experience I wanted, whether it was to relax and unwind, or use in self care rituals, or create a sensual experience. My close friends and coworkers were all intrigued and wanted to buy them from me. And that is how my business began. I love to put my own love and intention and energy into creating magic for others to experience and enjoy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
One of the most difficult decisions, yet, made easy because of the pandemic, was choosing to focus my energy on my business alone and to trust in the Universe to provide and open doors. I absolutely love being able to create full time and to tune in more deeply to my own creative process. I have tapped into my own growth as well as my previous professions in ecological farming and teaching yoga to tap into my role as a healer, and the way I am most comfortable expressing that is through aromatherapy. Probably the most exciting part of this magic is the actual process of creating. I love to mix and match essential oils to create an experience. I also dress my candles with dried flowers and herbs and crystals, all very intentionally selected to offer the full bodied aromatherapy healing experience.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The most special place for me is Arabia Mountain, A sunset here would definitely be on the list. If we had a week together, I’d also take them to Sweetwater Creek to hike a bit. Probably Fellinis for late night beer and pizza. If my friend and teacher was playing, I’d take them to see OkCello (Okorie Johnson) wherever he has a gig…the Atlanta City Winery would be great. And oysters at the Kimball House. We would definitely hit one of the local farmers markets around town to buy some goodies for a home cooked locally grown meal.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to recognize Oakhurst for all of their support in my first year of creating. I lived in the neighborhood and sold my candles porch side during the pandemic. The Oakhurst community showed up and supported me whole heartedly, and I will always be grateful. I’d also like to give a shout-out to Om Grown Art, my friends and fellow artists, for all of their support in graphic design, candle displays, custom candle holders, and for their big hearts. They have given me so much love throughout my first year of operation.
