We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Wiseman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Ever since I was a child in school, I knew I wanted to pursue a different career than the options in front of me. Nothing was able to capture my attention and interest than photos. I would sit in my grandmothers living room flipping through her old photo albums for hours. I was mesmerized by the old timey portraits, the frayed edges, and crinkled lines in each picture. Even back then, I understood the importance of them and how well loved they were.

I initially took a year off from school after I graduated unsure of what I wanted to study. Luckily, I met some fellow creatives that showed me how I could follow my passion and turn in into a career.

Being a Photographer not only allows me that creative outlet, it also pushes me to keep learning and trying new things. More importantly, I am capturing memories for Couples and Families so they can cherish for many years to come. Knowing that I am documenting important times in their life and freezing moments forever is one of the main driving forces and keeping my passion alive as a Photographer.

Photography is also a job that you can pursue anywhere in the world. It’s allowed me to live in different parts of the world and continue to work and capturing those memories.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Having your own business is challenging. There are ups, downs, and a lot to learn. But you have to keep going. I have experienced a lot of road blocks and uncertainty. Eventually, I had to find my “place” in the industry and figure out what my specialty was. I used to shoot any job that came my way but by narrowing my focus I am able to become an expert in my field and serve my clients to the best of my abilities.

I have also moved a couple of times, so building your business back up in a new place is not easy. You have to know how to adapt and change things up if needed in a new city, state, or country. I initially was solely a family photographer, but when I moved to Italy I shifted focus onto couples. I realized lots of couples were eloping or honeymooning in Italy, so I had more opportunities photographing couples. Now that I am back stateside there are more challenges coming my way, but it’s an ongoing learning experience with your own business. I have learned you can not be afraid of reaching out to fellow creatives and connecting because having a community where you are is important.

Through my years in photography, I have learned it’s not just about taking photos. You need to connect with your clients and be an expert in a lot of different areas. I love everything about elopements. When I meet with a potential couple, I want to learn all about them. Who they are individually and together. This way, I can help plan a day specifically for them! Wherever the elopement is, I make sure I know the area. I need to keep my clients safe and happy on their wedding day. I take pride in connecting with my clients and making them comfortable no matter what shoot we are doing.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

I have had a lot of help through my years in the industry. Starting with my family who always supported me while I figured things out. While deciding my career I admired the work of Josh Shirlen, who is the most amazing photographer. I had the honor of assisting him in some shoots and he was the first photographer I had met. My clients who stuck by me through the years and my friends who always help me bring my visions to life. I wouldn’t be here today without every single one of you!
