We had the good fortune of connecting with Stephanie Counts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stephanie, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
I don’t think that many people know that my niche of photography exists. I certainly didn’t when I had my kids even just 10 years ago. Now, many of my clients compare their desire to document the birth of their children to the same excitement they had when booking their wedding photographer. I’ve even heard of birth photography as that love story continued.

I wish I had known about birth photography and doula support when I was planning to have my children. Being able to look back on that day would mean the world to me. My kids even ask if there are photos, and all I have to show for it is some grainy cell phone footage. It would have also been helpful to have support from someone other than my husband who could have helped guide me through all that goes into giving birth. Knowledge is power, and I wish I would have had more during my own experiences. Now I can give that to my clients.

One of my most important jobs as a doula and birth photographer is to inform families of their choices and options, and just knowing that they have the opportunity to document this incredible day is the first step. Whether they want photography services, doula support, or both, they know they can count on me.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I would not be where I am today business-wise if it weren’t for my incredible family. My husband and I decided to both start businesses in the same year, and if it wasn’t for us encouraging and pushing each other we wouldn’t be where we are today. We wouldn’t be able to enjoy the freedom we have of working for ourselves if we didn’t take the leap in the first place. Also, living the on-call life like I do takes a special amount of support from my husband. Having to leave at a moment’s notice isn’t easy on our family, but they understand and accept that it’s vital for my job as a birth worker.

One of the greatest lessons that I’ve learned while having my business is the importance of making genuine community connections. I love connecting with other birth workers and helping to support one another. It’s truly my passion to help families in the community have the best and most informed birth experience possible whether it’s through my business or the connections that I’ve made in the community. Families that know me will be supported and empowered.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My friends and I love escaping to the north Georgia mountains. Being able to get away and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Ellijay or Blue Ridge is incredible. The wineries are fantastic as well as antique shopping, hiking through nature and really enjoying our time is great.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to all of the local midwives who work tirelessly to serve and support the women and families in the community.
