We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacye Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Stacye, what role has risk played in your life or career?
When it comes to risk I think about it for a second and then I dive in. I try not to think about it to much so I won’t talk myself out of my next move or project. I have taken plenty of risks and some have backfired but the ones that didn’t back fire definitely outweigh the few risks that did.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
DJ Sicari gave me some of the best DJing advice when I first started. He told me to always “find a way to put yourself in every set”. I didn’t understand the advise at first and sometimes I find that hard with playing artists music and also playing for a crowd to keep the dance floor moving. But once I understood it I was able to bring a fun vibe to the dance floor and people recognize and appreciate it. This also led me into production where I can do fun remixes and even drop some of my own tracks which is always kind of scary. I got into DJing by honestly just showing up, I was doing an interview with my brother Brendon at a computer shop I asked DJ Trixter to teach me and he told me to show up on a Tuesday. I showed up learned a lot, bought equipment, post the equiment on IG and Piper Carter (she ran a showcase that focused on women in Hip Hop) seen my post and booked me. I put in a lot of hours of practice and DJing shows and events building relationships with artists. Most of the challenges came for a “battle of the sexes” angle where I felt like I had to prove I belonged and was good enough just based off the fact that Im a women DJ.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
All of my artist friends are amazing so everything would mostly be supporting my friends. Art shows and pop-ups first come to mind. We would go roller skating at the Monroe Street Midway. Eat at places like Yum Village, Jose Taco, Antojitos Southwest, East Eats. Summertime Belle Isle, The Riverfront and any events I’m djing that week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people deserve shout outs but my mom was for sure one of my biggest supporters from the time I was born to her last breathe she had my back and supported me in everything I did.
