We had the good fortune of connecting with Stacy Hurst and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Stacy, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I do! I’ve had a few high-risk careers before I landed on interior design. I remember in college feeling crazy apprehension about moving to Los Angeles to pursue entertainment news. I said to my dad, “Why would anyone want to hire me?” His answer actually became my mantra for life. My dad is the single most insightful, inspiring, motivational person I’ve ever know so I’m not surprised his words have stuck with me. He said, “Stacy, why NOT you? Someone has to do it, why not you?” From that moment on, whenever I feel insecure, out of my element, even seemingly under qualified, I always think, “why not me?” Those three words have gotten me through excruciatingly tough times where I was hanging on by the skin of my teeth. They helped me to keep going when maybe others would have quit. I guess in a way, “why not me” allowed me to believe that I had the ability to do anything I put my mind to. Because… why not?

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

Jackson and I created Hurst & Home as a hobby. We were both so busy with our respective jobs, we didn’t feel grounded. At the time we had two little boys. One night we started brainstorming how we could teach our boys about delayed gratification, what hardwork can create, how rewarding it is to work towards something great. We always wanted to fix up an old house and suddenly thought- hey maybe it’s the time to do it! We bought a 100 year old shoe-box of a house and got to work. The learning curve was STEEP. I have always had a love for design. I’m a huge fan of quirky, unique aesthetics so I just went for it. And thankfully my husband, although a little nervous, supported me. I played with fun patterned tiles, restored unique pieces of furniture for bathroom vanities, reworked room layouts- honestly all stuff first timers probably SHOULDN’T be doing. But it worked and it was AWESOME. I documented our journey on Instagram and surprisingly people followed along. After our second flip, we started receiving requests to renovate clients’ homes. That’s when our hobby became a business.

Renovating homes is one of my favorite things to do. I love ripping out old cabinets, reconfiguring layouts, playing with textures and patterns. And I also really value preserving the integrity, beauty, and charm of the home. The transformations are always just SO FUN to see.

Perhaps as much as I love working on homes, is working with clients. I have had the privilege of getting to know some truly spectacular people through this business. Funny enough, some of my favorite clients are roughly five years old. I ADORE working with kids. The bright colors, the endless variety of crazy wallpapers- oh my gosh- I just get so excited!

Hurst & Home started from the desire to connect. To be closer to my husband and our little boys. To create something with our hands- something we could do with our kids. And it’s grown into something so much bigger. We get to meet so many wonderful people and I’d like to think, hopefully make their worlds a little brighter. I always tell my kiddos, “ Whether it’s a person or a place, leave the world better than when you found it”. I want to leave a good mark. I want it to be warm, and cosy, and make you smile.  If I can do that for someone by designing their dream kitchen, their baby’s first nursery, their teens’ game room- my mission is accomplished.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

First and foremost, my PARENTS, Linda and Joe. Everything I know about love, grace, humanity, hardwork, integrity, character , coping with life and loss has come from my parents. Early on, they were adamant my sisters and I understood how important our character is. Our word is our bond. Integrity is vital. Hardwork is essential. And life is meant to be enjoyed! My dad has such a clear view on life and what it takes to be happy. He drops everything when I have an issue I need help with. He’s Superman. My mom is my best friend and my biggest supporter. Before I moved into the design world, I was a television and film writer. My mom read every single script, treatment, outline I sent her. As a designer, there’s no one I get more excited to show my projects to than her. My parents really are two of my favorite humans in the world. I don’t know who, where, what I’d be without them.

Not second in ranking, just second in my life’s timeline (ha!) is my husband, Jackson. He believes in me more than I probably believe in myself. He encourages me and challenges me in the very best way. I don’t want to get too gushy, we don’t want it going to his head- KIDDING- but I wake up daily feeling so lucky and so blessed to have Jackson as my partner through this wild ride of life. There’s nobody I’d rather have by my side.
