We had the good fortune of connecting with Spinxx & Verona Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Spinxx & Verona, is there something you believe many others might not?
We disagree with the idea of “taking a leap of faith”. Why take a leap of faith, when you can build a bridge!

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Verbal Slick is a collective of Marketers, Creatives and Artists within the cultural zeitgeist of connecting brands to consumers through digital media, events (virtual for now) and graphic design. Verbal Slick’s motto is, “You’ve seen the words but never spoken like this”. We pride ourselves in planned, exceptional and timely service. Our repeat client business and client referral rates exceed over 95% and 97% respectively. We’re most proud of sustaining our business for over 5 years in October 2020. Covid-19 certainly affected us dramatically with our events & festival work, however, our graphic design work requests increased as brands needed smart, unique ways to connect to their customers while at home. We learned a long time ago anything in life worth preserving will not be easy, it will however be rewarding. We overcame challenges by investing in ourselves and one another. We’ve learned to take risks and if a door is closed, there will be an opportunity, gift or experience on the other side bigger and better. We want the world to know having a small Black Business in America takes patience meets opportunity sprinkled with fate. When deciding to go full time with Verbal Slick we wanted small Black Business owners to feel the power of our boutique Agency and make them feel like they were working with a Fortune 500 company. We are dedicated in affording our Clients an opportunity to bring their vision to life through strategy, planning and execution. It’s not enough to market to African Americans to check off a box. We are here and we spend our dollars with brands who identify, engage and support our communities.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
We recently expanded and relocated our headquarters to Los Angeles, CA. We have been in Los Angeles for less than a year and we are truly enjoying this town. In the light of Covid-19, many aspects of LA have been different. Pre-Covid we would start off the day with brunch (LA doesn’t wake up early) at EPLP in West Hollywood, CA. Then we would go to The Grove to walk off the meal. Once we leave the Grove, we’d shoot by Randy’s Donuts in Inglewood. After Randy’s Donuts we’d pay homage to the late great Nipsey Hussle and ride on Slauson Blvd. taking a picture by his mural. If no breaks needed, it’s on to the Beach for an evening sunset at Playa del Ray. Once the sun goes down, it’s back to Hollywood for a late night drive by on the Sunset Strip.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many who have played a pivotal role in our success. Our shout-out would have to be, our alma mater Dillard University in New Orleans, LA, our Collegiate Peers and the Atlanta Arts & Music community. We would not be the people we are today if not for our family, friends and the City of Chicago.
