We had the good fortune of connecting with Simone Floyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Simone, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Born and raised in the international hair capital of the world— Atlanta, Georgia — I have had a spark for rebuilding and maintaining healthy hair since my formative days, when I learned to maintain and manipulate my own hair in her childhood home with her father, when away from the grooming guidance of her mother.

Maturing in my craft led me to develop a desire for women of color to have pride in their crowns that they could flaunt, not only with grand style, but also with healthy regard. This notion led to birthing the Simply Silk brand and fostering my commitment to being a healthy hair coach, focusing on both the natural integrity and appearance of hair.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Outside of being a healthy hair care specialist, I also have developed my first product for my haircare product line, Simply Grow and Shine. Simply Grow and Shine is lightweight oil used to add shine to your hair while simultaneously promoting hair growth. I am currently in process of formulating new products that will be available to the world to purchase later this year!

Something that sets me apart in my industry is my passion. It has never just been about hairstyling for me. I have always had deep passion for clients understanding the importance of healthy hair and actually practicing it. Nothing brings me greater joy than helping my clients transform their crowns to be beautiful and healthy!

Getting to this point has not been easy and probably won’t get any easier any time soon. The biggest challenge thus far has been balancing working for my family businesses while giving my business my all. My dad owns a restaurant and my older sister owns a juice bar. I have worked for them since the beginning of their existence. Once I started my own business it was challenging for me to prioritize it over working for my family. Mainly because I did not want to stop being looked at as reliable to them or the business but also because I did want to completely walk away from contributing to such strong, well running businesses that are apart of my bloodline and would more than likely have the potential to be passed down to me in the future. The main way I was able to overcome that challenge was by making peace with unapologetically putting me and my dreams and goals above anybody and everything else. Once I was able to make personal peace with that, it took nothing more than communication to my dad and sister what I wanted to do, how I planned to take a step back but still be active and reliable to them and specifically outlined that. I thought they both would be disappointed in me and probably a little frustrated as well but they weren’t. They were completely understanding and supported my decision. That lesson mainly taught me that at the end of the day, the solution and understanding is always in a simple conversation and not an assumption.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would first give them the Simply Silk Haircare Experience because it is second to none. All of my clients receive top of the line service, with a glass of champagne, wine, cocktail, or drink of choice, the most relaxing hair bath, and flawlessly executed style.

If they were up for a fun and different style of workout, I’d bring them to DPAC (Dog Pound Athletic Club) to enjoy their Bound with the Pound trampoline class. This class is a high intensity cardio workout done on a personal trampoline.

Next I would take them to Spreading The Health Juice Bar and Cafe to enjoy a cold pressed juice, fresh smoothie, recovery health shots, or a delicious made to order sandwich.

After that, I’d take them to treat your feet to relax and nap to prepare for a good fun time J. R. Crickets – Cascade for Saturday nigh karaoke!

On Sunday we’d go to church at Dream Center ATL.

All else would include some of my favorite dining spots that include: Beetlecat, BarTaco, Eleanor’s, Rumis Kitchen, Joey D’s, Eight Sushi, and the restaurants in the Buckhead Shoppes to name a few.

I’d recommend rent and riding bikes through the beltline, go skeet shooting at Clays Range, or enjoying a rooftop night at LOA.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My village! I’d be completely be remiss if did not mention them. My entire existence is a reflection of all they have poured in to me especially my parents, Trent Floyd and Sonya Grider. My entire village (parents, siblings, grandparents, and what I refer to them as my auntie and uncle/best friends) set such great examples of being successful entrepreneurs, handworkers, and overall just good humans. They inspire day in and day out to be a top of the line human in everything I do. My parents worked extremely hard and consistently made sacrifices to cater to me, even to this day as an adult. My village has set me up with so much privilege but did not spoil me rotten and I accredit my success thus far and to come to that! I am the epitome of working hard and having a strong village to constantly support EVERYTHING I do. I am so thankful for them.
