We had the good fortune of connecting with Sierra Devin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sierra, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I was raised in a house where both parents were amazing entrepreneurs! The business talk seriously, never ended! Our dinner time conversations were typically surrounding something about the two of them finding new clients, helping each other brainstorm, and continuous talk on how to better their individual businesses. This quickly became all my mind thought about. As I went through high school each teacher, classmate, and family friend asked me what I was going to pursue post graduation. This lead to me saying, “I want to own my own business, I’m just not sure what it will be yet.” Fast-forward to March of 2020, my freshman year of college was moved on-line, my part-time waitressing job was closed & the pandemic forced me to think outside the box! I truly have always had an interest in photography but never knew where to start. The world wide pandemic really forced me to slow down and dive into this new hobby. Thats when what I like to call, YouTube University, went full swing and I was learning how to truly work my camera on manual, and even got my first Lightroom subscription (editing software). Next thing I new, I was being asked how much I would charge to take family pictures, and the rest was history. I never would have imagined that this hobby to just fill time would consume my life and make me so happy each and everyday. I owe every bit of the “business idea” to the drive my entrepreneur parents give me, the motivation my boyfriend gave me to make my business instagram, and the Lord for constantly showing me why this job is so rewarding!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to think of my photos of the art of telling someone else’s story. The ability to walk through life with people who may not have even known me before our first photo shoot, and tell their story in my photos is truly something I will never get over! Its the little things like getting to watch a family grow, watching couples go from dating to married, and watching seniors graduate high school then college that I get to capture and individually make unique for each person. I am here today because of the many people who trusted me to capture their biggest memories. It was a struggle to get where I am. Finding people who will invest in you when you have minimal work to show in the beginning was some of the hardest parts but educating myself and continuing to practice each day made me the photographer I am today. Lessons I have learned along the way is that your ideal client with value you and know your worth. You should never decrease your worth just to add another client to the list for the year. Work with people who prioritize you and it will give you an even bigger reward. I want the world to know that my brand was made to show others how beautiful their story is. Everyone’s is a little bit, or a big bit different and it should be captured that way!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting there a few specific spots I would take them! We would head into town and immediately go get lunch at Antico Pizza. This is hands down the best place to get pizza in Georgia! They import all of their ingredients from Italy and it shows in the taste. I would then give them the option of seeing a concert at the Tabernacle (planned ahead of time of course), going to the High Museum, or walking the belt line! We would finish the night by riding the ferris wheel because even though this is extremely touristy its the best view of the city!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is going to go to Lacey Larissa Photography! This woman is one of many photographers who answered every question I had when I first started. I grew up getting my family photos done with Lacey. Years later her oldest daughter and I became great friends that lead me to being at their house nearly everyday. Lacey was always shooting, editing, and handling all her admin work and I just couldn’t help but ask a million questions. You are my hero and biggest mentor, love you always Mama Lacey!
