We had the good fortune of connecting with Sierra Buford and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sierra, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I really wanted the freedom to be able to travel and with my previous teaching job that was just not possible. I’ve always loved working with people one on one and after completing a virtual assistant internship and then my bachelors degree in Organizational Leadership I had no reason not to go for it! It just made sense.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My official title these days is an “Digital Content Manager”. The work I do heavily depends on the specific client and their business. But a few of the things I can often be found doing on a day to day basis are setting up sales sequences, email marketing, creating and managing online courses, building landing pages and websites, podcast management, and editing and proofreading content! I have always enjoyed working with people one on one and found myself itching for more freedom to travel and live my life to the fullest. I decided to take an online course called “Virtual Assistant Internship” back in 2020 and this is really what jump started my career. I then jumped back into school and graduated with my bachelors in Organizational Leadership in December of 2021. Starting January 2022 I took this work full-time. Of course, my time is my own so I get to decide what full-time means 🙂
There have been many challenges in my life but I strongly believe that each of them has played a part in where I’m at today. I am always searching to find ways to help people and this is one of the ways I overcome challenges in my own life. Working to understand others thoughts, opinions, beliefs, upbringings, businesses … not one of us is the same and once you can understand that and use the knowledge you gain from others for the greater good, your own “challenges” become miniscule.
I want the world to know that entrepreneurship is not easy but once you make the decision to dive into this lifestyle, you start to realize what is and isn’t important to you. It’s really life changing and I’m so glad I had the courage and strength to step out of my comfort zone when I did. We only get one life and it’s important to really think about how you want to live the life you’ve been given.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A little mixture of good food, good brews, and great entertainment all of which is easy to find in Atlanta!
We would eat at one of Atlanta’s staples, The Vortex in Little 5 Points and follow that with some good brews at The Porter. Of course we would have to spend one entire day walking the beltline and stopping along the way for coffee (Aurora Coffee in Little 5 is THE BEST), lunch (Superica at Krog street), Ice Cream (Jennies, duh) and a tour of all that Ponce City Market and Krog street has to offer!
Either an Atlanta United game or an Atlanta Braves game would have to be in the itinerary, preferably both!
Breakfast at The Flying Biscuit and a stroll through Candler Park where I grew up, including a long time favorite of mine, Candler Park Market.
A round of disc gold at the cities ONLY in town course, Perkerson Park, and a stop at the best brewery around, Contrast Artisan Ales would round out the perfect weekend.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are countless people that have played a role in my success today. First and foremost, my grandparents for instilling strength, confidence, and determination in me from day 1. My upbringing was certainly not a normal one but I am so thankful for the people I encountered along the way that have helped push me to where I’m at today. Friends, Family, Co-workers, Coaches, Teachers, my grandparents & my father … it really takes a tribe and I am eternally grateful for mine.
