We had the good fortune of connecting with Shoni King and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shoni, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The idea for Life by Shoni came about for several reasons. I am a licensed cosmetologist and always wanted to have my own hair product line. Aside from being a licensed hair stylist I am also a certified medical assistant and spent over 12 years working in dermatology. My family, friends and clients would constantly come to me for advice and solutions to their hair and skin issues, so I began making recipes in my kitchen to help them. They all loved the results they were getting and kept coming back for more. At that point I realized I has something special and decided to share it with the world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
All Life by Shoni products are hand made with the finest ingredients. All of our recipes are formulated and tested to ensure the best results are achieved. It is our goal to restore life to the hair and skin of everyone who uses our products. It has not been a easy road thus far and we are still working had every day to build. Building a line of handcrafted products is not an easy thing to do but determination and persistence has been key. When making products by hand there is plenty of trial and error. When I started this line I didn’t know anything about the science behind it. I took 2 years researching and educating myself on ingredients and techniques before I ever sold my first product. It was and still is very important to me that I am making quality products that will be beneficial to whoever uses it. Life By Shoni cares about our customers and wants to make sure they have what they need to look and feel their best from head to toe.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Originally I’m from St Louis and love when my family comes to visit. Of course when they come to Atlanta they want to see the sites and have a good time and of course do some shopping. I would take them to brunch at Another Broken Egg Cafe for some good food and mimosas to give the energy we need to hit the shops. We would probably hit up a couple malls like Lenox, Phipps or Mall of Georgia to pick up some essentials for a night out. We would probably get out and hit some spots like The Compound, Boogalou or Sky Lounge. If we just wanted to have a nice dinner and see some sites we might go to Pappadeaux, Ruth’s Chris or my fav Spondivits. And we can always just have fun in the city, by going to the Trap Museum or College Football Hall Of Fame (I’m a huge sports fan). Honestly Atlanta has so many options for dining and entertainment it’s endless good times around here for everyone.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family has been extremely instrumental in my success. Starting a new business is a huge endeavour and takes lots of dedication, time and money. My family has been here for me every step of the way. No matter if I needed financial help, help making products or filling & shipping orders, they are always there to help in any way they can. On top of all that they are very inspirational and encouraging. We are a family of entrepreneurs and we have regular family business meetings to help hold each other accountable and to make sure we are helping build each others success.
