We had the good fortune of connecting with Shenae Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shenae, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?

When I started Whatcha Servin’ it was to just feed people who wanted different and tasty food alternatives than beef or pork. Once word got out that I was offering catering and private chef services then my thoughts became a business. Many people enjoy that I do not have the same menu.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Although I am still perfecting my craft as a chef and still learning the do’s and don’ts, I believe I’m currently at a decent spot of people loving my food and spreading the word. I create dishes that are different and a few trendy delights. Learning recipes from my dad and my aunts allow me to tweak something old and reintroducing those dishes with my own twist. It’s not always easy thinking of meals that will sell or people will love, but once the people have a taste, people fall in love with what I create. Some of the lessons I am still learning today is that if I love it then others will too and not everything is for everyone.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First and foremost, if my bestie, Kiyana Riley, was coming into town to visit. Baby!! I’m cooking her a meal. I’m a CHEF, duh!!!!! However, we would go see some black art, probably do a girls day of shopping and just sit and talk. I’ve really become a home body honestly since having kids. However, whenever she visits we doing whatever she wants

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my two children, Kaleigh and Kree. They keep me motivated and encouraged to continue on days I want to give up of my craft. I would also like to give a HUGGGGE shoutout to my family, who were my first true customers, pushers and believers in what I’m doing. Thank you to my Aunt Keda for recommending me to you all and to all of her colleagues and friends. I would also like to shoutout my love who also pushes me, promotes my cooking and boasts about my talent as a chef.
