We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaymeshia Pacius and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shaymeshia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my business was to make affordable and helpful products for people suffering with dry skin, discoloration and flaky skin. It all started when my son was born. He was born with eczema and after a few months, I noticed that the popular baby lotions offered in stores really weren’t helping him. I would lotion him up after a bath and by the morning, he had ashy patches throughout his body forcing me to constantly reapply the lotion which became costly and time consuming. After some research on alternative, more long-lasting options, I decided to try using raw Shea butter. The moisturizing effects definitely lasted longer but if you’ve ever used raw Shea butter then you know how hard it can be. Literally, it can be hard as rocks making it a real challenge to spread on the body. I wondered how I might be able to make it softer and that’s when I discovered that it can be whipped using a mixer! Next thing I knew, everyone in my household was using my whipped Shea butter. We were thrilled with the whipped Shea butter but I wanted more than just plain whipped butter and that’s when I got inspired to start adding fragrances and colors and the rest is history.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am most proud of how many people I have been able to help with my product. I go out of my way to keep my product affordable because I want to make sure people have a real solution to their skincare needs. I am proud of myself for allowing myself to be creative. You see, for a long time I didn’t think I was very creative but once I opened up and allowed my creativity to flow, the possibilities have become endless! I am where I am today because I saw a need for a product and I was inspired to create and supply it. I researched different options and I continue to try out different recipes that will appeal to more and more people. My families’ support and encouragement inspires me to push myself to keep going, to keep trying new things, and to keep putting in the time and effort to grow my business. It is not always easy but I have overcome challenges by keeping myself motivated and inspired. It is so important to keep find what it is that motivates you. For me, that’s helping people. The more people that I help, the more inspired I am to continue. When you are motivated and believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything! I have learned so many lessons along the way but the most importantly, I’ve learned how valuable it is to be flexible and solution-driven. Sometimes life is going to send obstacles your way and if you aren’t flexible and solution-driven, they can have you stuck. It’s okay to be stuck for a moment but it’s important to keep it moving. For example, when I first decided that I wanted to offer shipping options I ran into a few obstacles. I did a few test runs and mailed out free samples to my friends. It was during that trial and error process that I problem-solved and figured out the best packaging and shipping options to use to ensure that my products arrived in great condition for my clients to enjoy. If I allowed every little hiccup to stop me, I would never be where I am today. I will continue to work on my products and build my business for my clients. I want the world to know that Skin So Humble LLC was created for them! I love people and I wanted to make products that they’ll love forever.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my friend visited for a week, I would want to take them to places that promoted physical, mental, and emotional wellness and I’d also want to take them out for a bit of excitement. First, I would take them hiking either to High Falls Park or Indian Springs Park. They are both very beautiful and a hike is great exercise but it can also be very relaxing. We would of course apply our Skin So Humble lotion prior to going to avoid any uncomfortable chafing!
I would also want to take my friend out to eat something delicious where I know we would be able to enjoy great food, great conversation, and great customer service. Friendly and attentive customer service is so important to me which is why I really go out of my way to connect with my clients. With that in mind, some of my favorite restaurants include: Saki Sushi, Uncle Bobby’s, Salaams Seafood & The Georgia Potato factory!
Just like I like to keep things exciting by trying out different scents and colors with my products, I would like to mix things up and take my friend somewhere exciting. Atlanta is about an hour from me but I do think it’s worth the commute. There are so many things to do, try, and see so there’ll never be a dull moment.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would dedicate my shoutout to my family. It’s hard to pick one person because they all go so hard for me -even the kids. The kids will literally ask me for gift boxes containing butters, scrubs, etc. as birthday gifts for their friends and thank you gifts for their teachers. This means so much to me because I come from a very honest family. We don’t sugarcoat things, we just tell it like it is, so when they love my products to the point that they not only want to use them but they also want to gift them to their friends, I know that I’ve definitely created a good product! They are my drive. Their support encourages me to continue to create affordable, wonderfully scented, and helpful products.
