We had the good fortune of connecting with Shaon Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shaon, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly, it chose me. When I was young I wanted to become a teacher. As a kid they played such an important role in my life and I wanted to do that when I got older. As a pre-teen I entered into a talent show and for the first time I was bit by the music bug. Three years later I made a demo with a producer and the rest is history. Music went from just being a hobby to something I loved and was passionate about. Once I got involved in music it consumed my life and allowed me to make it into the career I have today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I wear many hats but first and foremost I am a songwriter. The first song I wrote was at the talent show I mentioned before then writing for plays at my church and eventually other artists. Years later I got into producing which turned into developing talent. In between those periods I was an artist myself working on music at the studio, performing at festivals and talent shows, and learning the business side of music. That’s when I knew things were serious because my time and money was being invested. A year after getting my business degree I started my own record company which was officially my first business. I am where I am today by networking and working with others. You have to be open and willing to learn from others and know how to effectively communicate to get the most out of people. I learned early not having the right people around you can complicate things. You have to be willing to work harder than everyone else and not get content with early success. A lesson I learned is that there’s nothing wrong with needing to restrategize your goals if you have too much on your plate or simply need to refocus.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
One of my favorite spots in Atlanta used to be The Beautiful Restaurant or Gladys Knight Chicken & Waffles. Of course The Aquarium or World of Coca Cola are nice spots for tourists. It would be wrong to not go skating at Cascade or visit Atlantic Station for some shopping. The options here are really endless depending on what your friend is into.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The biggest influence in my life has been my mother. For me she was my first supporter, mentor, leader, etc. Growing up as the middle child watching how she raised all boys helped me to navigate through adversity that I faced early on.
