We had the good fortune of connecting with shanaya Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi shanaya, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
Success is defined as one’s ability to reach precise goals overtime, whatever those goals may be. In some ways, a better word for success might be achievement or improvement. It is not a destination but a journey that helps develop the talents and aids you need to thrive.
Prioritizing growth mindset as a habit, has made me feel like I can change, evolve, and discover through effort. Being capable of growth is a astonishing habit to obtaining success. When things get tough, look for ways to improve and improvise already acquired skills to keep working toward success.
Recognizing, planning and tracking progress toward your goals is a habit that can lead to success. These actions contain other habits of successful people, such as living consciously, bringing action, avoiding wasting time and being goal orientated or results-driven.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started my first business at the age of 11 back when quarantine first began in March of 2020. I started selling glitter tumblers and in those months my first-ever business took off, eventually in those upcoming months I had made enough money to buy myself a MacBook. Now I didn’t have any intentions on becoming a graphic designer when making my first big purchase this was just something to assist me with my first business. In those upcoming months, me and my grandmother moved from Iowa to back to our home state of Illinois this is where I began my obsession of designing on my computer it was a talent I kept to myself that I didn’t like to share mainly because I was starting to enjoy being a designer instead of the business that I started in 5th grade. I was afraid many wouldn’t support me ending my business to work on my computer so I began doing something I started to dread rather than doing something I loved. I started asking other designers on Instagram for assistance in June of 2021 that’s where I started to invest in what was originally called SR Designs By Shanaya.
In the beginning, I began doing this as like a side job and never really thought of it as something that could’ve token off. During the summer months, I worked and practiced on selling pre-made designs until I stumbled upon many other designers taking custom bookings which prompted me to switch my business niche over to custom-made designs instead of generic pre-mades. Now we are here, August of 2021 I got my first real client. I was ecstatic because this is something I truly want to pursue. Now I am in the 7th grade running 2 businesses all while going to school, at this time life is hectic and I never have a day off to myself but I love my newfound hobby. I begin to generate more clientele which is when I changed our name to Shanaya Graphics the name change for me was just a new start. As I progressed my clientele grew I didn’t have a passion for it anymore in the business I started in 5th grade, the new year of 2022 came and eventually that business shut down and I put all of my effort in Shanaya Graphics. Over the last year, my business has grown tremendously and I am grateful for everything my clients and business has done for me!
Over the course of my journey i’ve learned to trust your own process with short, mid and long term goals. This experience has taught me that when people choose you out of thousands, it is because they have faith in your abilities, which makes the process all the more rewarding.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love being outside early so we’d probably be walking down the lake front near lake shore drive just to feel ease at the start of the day. For lunch i’d definitely take my best friend to bar louie, although Im not old enough to drink I just feel like thats the perfect place to dine for lunch. My favorite spot in the city right now would be Maggie Daley Park or Millennium park it feels nice to just sit maybe walk around and enjoy the downtown and beautiful scenery Chicago has to offer. By then i’d be tired so ill definitely have to have my mid day nap. Then i’m up and ready we’d definitely have to go eat tacos at Taco Luna in the Pilsen neighborhood, Phils Pizza in bridge port or Caribbean Jerk Joint in Hyde park. I haven’t experienced everything here in Chicago so theres so much stuff we have time to explore. Finally we’d definitely grab dinner at Maggiano’s they never disappoint!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My grandmother she’s truly my biggest motivator and inspiration. She pushes me to do anything I put my mind to, she’s been with me since I could remember. She’s made plenty of sacrifices to make sure I was able to get the information I need to excel and empower myself. She has poured endless amounts of love, support and understanding into me, and I am forever thankful for that.
