We had the good fortune of connecting with Shanay Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shanay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business initially started from just trying something new. I am an artist already in the traditional sense with pencil and paper, however during COVID, I just wanted to try a new medium. I think of candle-making as an art form, where my wax and oils are my medium of choice, and my vessels are my canvas. I found that making candles became very therapeutic for me. I could completely zone out with some music and make candles for hours.

With that zen came the thought of creating a brand that would encourage and promote self-care and love by simply lighting a candle. Candles help people to relax and can even put in you in a sort of trance when watching the dancing flame.

I know personally for me, I had a difficult time making time for myself and self-care, while also fulfilling my other roles in life. But I am much better at carving that time out now, even if it’s only an hour. Self-Care is needed. It is deserved. I want my customers and those that come to my page to know that taking the time is okay, and you will feel better afterwards. But first light a candle.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

I am now a full-time artisan, as I resigned over the summer from the job I had previously. What sets me apart from others, is my drive, and my names. My names of my candles evoke that mood and create a whole vibe. I am most proud of how far I have gotten and how much I have grown in such a short time. Prayer and never giving up truly helps! I speak life over my business constantly and that I will grow and go places I never even thought I could get too.

Was it easy? It was for me, because as I said I prayed and had faith that I would succeed, and I am doing just that. I launched Obsidian: The Signature BLK on July 31, 2021, and have so far reached over7 states multiple times, became an Artisan on another platform and have been able to get my candles in a few stores. I am aware that this is something that for some may take years to get to, and I am so excited that in 3 months I have accomplished those wins.

Lessons I knew but have been reminded of is that I must be flexible. Things aren’t always going to go exactly as I plan, but that’s ok. I am a creative so technically there is no right or wrong way because I create!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the city, I would definitely have to take them to the Melting Pot in Towson. I love that place so much, lol. If you’re not familiar it is a fondue restaurant, and the cheese is everything lol. Afterwards, we would go to the Harbor, because there are so many shops and things to see there, and we would finish the visit with a trip to DC, where there are so many museums for FREE!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to recognize the support of my family and friends. Starting with my husband, Glenn, he has been extremely supportive in every way with my candles. He is my scent tester along with our children. He is my calm when I may be feeling a little stressed. I am so grateful for him! I recognize next my children. Simply for them coming and letting me know my candles smell good and that they are proud of me! That means everything and lets me know they see me. Next, I recognize my extended family, who have supported me by purchasing candles, and giving me feedback while also sharing with their friends and coworkers. I appreciate them so much. And, lastly, my friends who have supported me as well, and have shared my candles with their networks, gave me feedback and encourage me to keep going! I love everyone so much and I thank them. I am grateful for each of you.
