We had the good fortune of connecting with Shalika Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shalika, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I always been curious about ingredients that is in our hair and skin products. So I would research the names in the ingredients and realize some of those products do more harm then good on our skin and hair, which would explain why I rarely get the result I’m looking for when it come to my hair and skin. So I started researching what products is good for my natural hair (which is dry and very coiled like) and what is good for my dry callous hand and feet. Then I start experiencing and making my own products personal for me which turn into a business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Belle Beau is a skin and hair products that have natural ingredients that will give us the results we as people of color are looking for which is glowing moisturizing skin and hair. I sell all natural body butter for men and women with aloe Vera that moisturize the skin along with Shea butter, mango butter avocado oil and coconut oil that will keep the skin moisturize throughout the day. I have Fragrance and non fragrance butters available at bellebeae-us.com. Coming soon I’d a hair growth serum for women and men and all natural body wash.

It is not easy starting this journey. I would make and test my products out over and over to the point I would get frustrated and just wanted to give up. With the encouragement of my family I was able to keep pushing through and not give up and learn lessons on my trail and error that ended up helping become better and better.

What I learn about my business is that I will always be in learning mode of learning something new everyday and apply what I learn to my busy as well to my life.

I want the world to know that our skin and hair get what it need from ingredients that is made from earth and my products provide that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going to a Word Of Mouth Wednesday Poetry event downtown in Winston Salem where I sip on drink called lemon drop.

I would eat out a restaurant called the Filling Station on fourth street where you can get a delicious shrimp and beef grits.

I love going to the beach ( I been to myrtle beach, Miami and Cancun) where I enjoy driving a Jet Ski.

I love crab legs so I love the restaurant called the Red Crab-shack.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shout out to my wonderful brothers Terrell and Orlando for giving me the courage and push to start my business even when I wanted to give up. You guys reminded me who I am and to stand straight and tall on that.
