We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakirah Dickens and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shakirah, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m born and raised in Newark, NJ aka Brick City and growing up in an urban environment like Newark you learn to be resourceful. I come from a talented family who always hustled so I learned early on how to monetize my hobbies. From selling candy and keychains to neighborhood kids, to selling soap and body butters to people across the US.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a skincare enthusiast that loves to smell good. Before self care Sundays were a thing, I regularly used face scrubs, masks, fade creams & I loved the scented lotions and sprays from the mall stores but judging by the many trips to the dermatologist….my skin did not. INSTEAD OF using a stinky shampoo prescribed for a skin rash I took the holistic route and began researching herbs and oils for healthy skin. Im a big label reader and I noticed the products in stores had very little of the ingredients I needed for my skin to flourish.

That was the beginning of Fabyoulife, a clean and inclusive beauty brand that offers eye catching artisan soaps, fast absorbing body butters, top rated face cleanser and other effective skincare products. Fabyoulife addresses chronic skin conditions such as eczema, acne and hyperpigmentation while providing a FAB experience for women looking for cleaner products without sacrificing smelling amazing. I used my Chemistry background and over 10 years experience in good manufacturing practices, ingredient sourcing and label compliance to develop a line of non toxic products that smells amazing.

While I can be much further in my business, it’s my passion for creating effective natural products that keep the girls smelling good that keeps me going. I love getting feedback on how my products have helped someone. Scaling up has been real challenge being a solopreneur but I remain consistent and persistent to proving the ultimate FAB experience for my FAB Baes.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m more of a homebody, but I love to eat and be artistic. I’d go to a food truck festival, hit up a few instagrammable galleries in the city for fun and flicks, a wine tasting and did I say food?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to my mom. She has always supported my talents and encouraged my dreams. I got my hustle spirit from her when I used to help her craft her floral arrangements to sell as a young child. My family is also super supportive.
