We had the good fortune of connecting with Shakara Clinkscale and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shakara, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own fashion business was deeply rooted in a personal journey and a commitment to making a positive impact. Growing up as a tall and slender individual, I struggled to find clothes that truly fit. This experience, combined with the inspiration I drew from my niece Zamirah, who battled cancer and felt a loss of confidence during her treatment, fueled my determination.
Zamirah’s journey made me realize the transformative power of fashion in boosting self-esteem. Witnessing her challenges and her desire to feel beautiful despite her circumstances became a driving force. I wanted to create a brand that goes beyond just clothing – a brand that empowers individuals to feel confident and beautiful in their unique bodies.
The thought process behind my business was a blend of personal passion for fashion, a commitment to inclusivity, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact on people’s lives. Starting my own business allowed me the creative freedom to bring this vision to life and contribute to the confidence and self-expression of others. The joy of working for myself stems from the ability to pursue a meaningful purpose while doing what I love.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art in fashion design is a unique blend of personal experiences, passion, and a commitment to empowerment. What sets me apart is the deeply personal nature of my creations, driven by my own struggles with finding well-fitting clothes and the inspiring journey of my niece, Zamirah.
What I’m most proud of is not just the clothing I design, but the confidence and empowerment they bring to those who wear them. The joy of seeing individuals feel beautiful and confident in my creations is truly fulfilling.
The journey to where I am today professionally hasn’t been easy. There were moments of discouragement, and I contemplated giving up before I found the support and encouragement I needed. Overcoming challenges involved resilience, the support of loved ones, and a renewed determination to pursue my passion.
One crucial lesson I’ve learned is the power of perseverance and the importance of a strong support system. Surrounding myself with people like my twin sister and significant other, who believe in my dreams, has been key to overcoming obstacles.
I want the world to know that my brand is not just about fashion; it’s about empowerment, confidence, and embracing one’s uniqueness. The personal touch in each design reflects a journey of self-discovery and resilience. My story is a testament to the transformative power of fashion in boosting self-esteem and celebrating individual beauty.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are two incredible individuals who have played pivotal roles in my journey. First and foremost, I want to dedicate a heartfelt shoutout to my twin sister, Chatara Clinkscale, known as “Tara the Esthetician.” Her unwavering support and collaboration in various fashion events have been instrumental. Despite running her flourishing skincare business, she always finds the time to stand by my side, and I am immensely appreciative of her.
Secondly, a special shoutout goes to my significant other, Wayne Clendenin, a talented rapper and producer behind “Capbaby Productions.” Before I met him, I was on the verge of giving up on my passion for fashion designing due to discouragement. However, he became a true pillar of support, encouraging me to pursue my dreams. His support not only reignited my desire to work hard in the fashion industry but also played a crucial role in where I am today.
These individuals have been my source of inspiration, encouragement, and strength, and I owe a significant part of my success and perseverance to them.
