We had the good fortune of connecting with Serge “Power Surge” Turnier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Serge “Power Surge”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Based on my extensive experience in the music industry, I decided to start my own record label “Power Surge Music Group” to help promote the Haitian culture all over the world. Some of my successful productions drove me to this decision. Songs such as Wyclef Jean’s “Level Pi Wo”, JPerry’s album “One Life To Live”, which secured a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. I also produced JPerry’s single “Bouje” featuring international superstar Admiral T of Guadeloupe, which secured a licensing deal with worldwide fitness company “Zumba” and also a synchronization deal with Disney Pixar for the movie “Cars 3”. Overall, starting my own record label helped me combine my passion for music, my desire for creative freedom, and my entrepreneurial spirit, allowing me to take my career to the next level and make a significant impact on the industry by helping other artists as well.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My professional life is split into multiple places. I work in the corporate world as an Enterprise Sales Manager for one of the worlds biggest fintech companies, Verifone. I love my job, my customers and the company I work for., where I have been awarded top performer for over 4 years in the industry. I also work as the owner of Power Surge Music Group, which is a label that offers music production, music distribution and events promotion in the Haitian Music Industry. At PSMG, I also organize toy drives to help underprivileged kids, especially those based in Haiti. Every year for my birthday, on December 24th, I dedicate my day to helping an orphanage in Haiti either by being there with them during most of the day, or by collecting toys and gathering goods to send to them.
I have been actively working in the music industry since the age of 12, when I produced my first song which was widely popular on the radio in Haiti. My music got the attention of international labels and I performed alongside many popular artists such as Jamaican artist Beenieman, at a very young age. It was not an easy journey but one that i enjoyed due to my passion. My parents never really understood me and were not supportive at first since I was so young, but I was hard headed and did what I wanted regardless of there criticism. And this paid off, as they became my biggest supporters once I started receiving national and international recognition and awards for my work.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my first stops would be to grab dinner at Desta Ethiopian Kitchen on Briarcliff. Then we would hit Rock Steady in Midtown for a night of Afro Beats and good drinks. During the week we would check out Ponce City Market, the Marietta Square, the Atlanta botanical gardens, etc….
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout out the artist on my label, Sebastien Rousseau also known as Dj SEB. I would also like to shout out Tifane, one of my very good friends and Haitian artists based in Atlanta. I want to shout out my very good friend and mentor, Evens Latortue also known as Gogo, the saxophone player from the group Shleu Shleu. Shout out to my wife for always supporting me in all my projects. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
