We had the good fortune of connecting with Selena Evans Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Selena, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Hello, my name is Selena Miller, and I would like to share with you, how my background and upbringing, made an impact on who I am today.

From the time we are born, we are a part of a family and as we grow, we begin to realize that, and where we are raised, and how we are raised, has a profound impact upon your life.

Granted, we have no choice in this matter, but we do have choices, on what we choose to do and be in life, even though some circumstances and family situations can be extremely difficult and also can be even dangerous.

As it turned out for me, I was born and raised in an upper middle class African American family, in a white suburban rural community. I went from grade school to high school, in predominantly white school system, with a handful of black students.

The result of this is was, I was isolated from other black families and kids, so I had no restrictions on how I should be or what I could be, I was raised to think that everything and anything was possible, as long as I could imagine it and work hard for it.

Of course I experienced discrimination from both sides the whites and the blacks, but being so isolated, I just dreamed of a time, when I could make my own decisions, about the kind of life and person I wanted to be.

While growing up I became very interested in fashion, and I would read every fashion magazine and book I could get my hands on, back in the day we had no computers or cell phones, so I was limited to a lot of information, that is so readily available today.

I learned from these magazines and books, about fashion designers, models, makeup artists, hairdressers, photographers but little did I know, this would propel me and prepare me for, an amazing and incredible, professional and financially rewarding career.

After high school I attended a cosmetology school, hoping they would teach me about makeup (this is the career I decided to pursue), but I soon learned that passing the state boards for hair, was their main focus and not makeup.

So I then set my sights on working at one the local department stores, at the Elizabeth Arden makeup counter, and from there many other departments stores and  makeup counter brands.

What an invaluable school of learning, from how to interact with customers, other employees, taking responsibility and constantly learning and improving my makeup skills.

This eventually lead to other jobs such as makeup instructors, fashion stylist, photography makeup artist, promotional and music videos artist, and eventually my true calling, was as a Tv and Film makeup artist.

You can see my work on such films and tv shows such as, Edward Scissorhands, Passenger 57, The Problem Child 2, Major Payne, Ace Ventura 2, The Pirates Of The Caribbean Series, The Hunger Games Series, Selma, Hidden Figures, The Underground Railroad, The Guardians Of The Galaxy, Ford vs Ferrari, Black Panther, Oppenheimer, The Color Purple (The Musical Movie), Empire (tv show), Star, Stranger Things, The Watchmen, The Resident, Sleepy Hollow, Vampire Diaries, just to name a few, and you can view all my other credits on, IMDB: Selena Evans Miller.

My makeup career, has been very successful and exciting, I have worked on many of the top films and with the most incredible famous actors in the world, and I have also traveled extensively and made many friends.

There have been many high’s and low’s in my life but I would not change a single thing, because it all adds up to what I am today.

A very successful and an extremely grateful women, who has fought and work very hard for everything she has achieved.

God Bless You All, On Your Personal Journey And Your Road To Success.

Love ❤️ Selena
